Ok, I am in the process of download Mandrake 9.0 and I am wondering if I need to get the 3rd disk. What is really on that disk?

Ok, then I might as well get the 3rd disk. I might try using wine.

3rd disk is just basically an archive of a bunch of programs that aren't needed for normal install.

3rd disk is source code ONLY

you can do full install without the 3rd disk

in fact, if you download ONLY the first disk , you are still ok

linux integrates the internet really well... you can get everything off the internet... once you install, make sure you swithc over everything to the internet, or you'll have to put in a cd everytime you try to install something (if you don't do the full install)

The first two have most of the goods. Better grab 'em while you can.

You can install the entire OS from just the first CD, hence the beauty of Linux. You can have an entire OS with very few resources and a small amount of space used!
The two other cd's are for every extra add-on you install. The 3rd disk is especially for documentation, extra GUI's, and Server capabilities.

I've used just CD1 and CD2 which worked great.

For WINE, the best thing to do is to download the latest version instead of off the CD.
