i have a quick question..

which one would be more worth it:
ATI Radeon 8500LE 128mb, $115 shipped
Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4200 64mb, $112 shipped

thanks

Boy i can see the fanboys come running. :)

128 mb of ram will help you later on.

ATi gets my vote.

Tough call, the 4200 will be a faster card but 128mb of RAM will be good for games that will use it (mainly future games). I'd say if you just want a card for a year or maybe a little longer then go 4200, if you want to use the card for many years to come go 8500 (the extra RAM will let you use more detailed textures etc. in future games).

Another thing to note is that when you buy an 8500 LE you dont really know what clock speed it will be, some are 250/250, some are 230/230 and some are even 230/200 (crucial). Even buying a built by ATi 8500LE does not guarantee that you will get a 250/250 card.

I'd get the 4200 myself.

i would get the Ti4200, but only if you feel like rmaing, those Gainward 4200s have a know PSOD problem

I say get the Ti 4200. 64 MB of ram is plenty...neither the 8500 or Ti 4200 will run the "future games" at good speeds..so just get the card that will perform a bit better now.

I always try to avoid buying ATI cards if at all possible. Simply because Nvidia has a great track record with driver updates, while ATI has been lacking (but improving) in that area.

That being said I would still take the 8500 with 128mb of ram over a 64mb 4200. I'm not real familiar with ATI cards, but wouldn't a 9000 pro 128 suite you better than either card? They're only $95 shipped on Pricewatch.

the radeon8500 is as fast as a geforce3 ti200, the LE is even slower. Your best bet is get the 128mb geforce4 ti4400 its only $200 but will last you many years

i'm 128MB OEM radeon 8500LE,
it's too cheap, and comes with slow rams (200mhz default),
but i can say it's better than 64MB 4200...

my vote goes 2 ATI! :)

he,he,he........

i came a running when i heard the call!!! definitely the ti4200......either the 128 or 64 will do......128 if you want detail and 64 if you want speed....64 will allow great detail on most games but will have to back off on serious stuff like morrowind.....aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh......got it off my chest......

Your all a bunch of fanboys. ATI and Nvidia both make fine cards. I like ATI for price, performance and visual quality. Speed isnt everything.

Well said. I own both the ATi Radeon 8500le (64mb, clocked at 280/280) and the Geforce Ti500, and the are great cards. I can't tell the difference, and I paid $40 bucks for the radeon (it was a steal) and $100 for the GeForce 3.

I have to say ATi is holding my fancy, with the 9500 at $160 that can be modded for 9700 speeds.

the only difference between the 8500 and 8500LE is 25mhz.....and it would still crush a Ti200...the 8500 is as fast as a Ti500...i dont know where you get your info from.....

I might add that ATI drivers have come a long way since that was written back in 2001. If you do get a 128 MB le dont worry about the default clock. The LEs BGA ram lets it clock just as much or more than many retail 8500s. Hey if the card can handle UT2K3 and look good doing it, thats all I really care about.

Radeon 8500le

I just purchased the Radeon Le 8500 128mb ram and its a great card. It's stock at 250 core and 200 mem which is 400ddr. I eaisly clocked it to 300 core and 240 mem (480ddr) and that card is perfect. I get 80fps on Unreal 2003 set to 1024x768 with quality settings maxed. The system is a Athlon 900Mhz, 384mb pc133ram.

alright thanks for the replies.

which one of the two would last longer and be better in the long run if i wanted to play games at 1024x768x16(or 32) for years to come?

i dont really need like 1600x1200x32 or anything that crazy. High resolution and precise details doesn't really matter. Just playable speeds and.. well somewhat good detailing features.

I think both would be very nice, but if your going to have it for a while go ahead and get the 128 mb card.
