what is an i/o shield?

what is an I/O shield?

I believe that is the metal with all the holes in it in the back of the case. The one where the mouse, keyboard etc plug through to get to your motherboard. Most of them are removable so that if a new motherboard has a different design you don't have to get a new case for it, just change the shield.
