Abit Kd7 problem...

let me start off by saying this isnt the first time this has happened to me. The first time, i just rma'ed the board (prob wrong thing to do)... but anyway...

i was overclocking the cpu (10.5x185) went to set my ram to cas2, let the comp restart... then it gave me an error loading xp, but i made the mistake of hitting the reset button... then it would not boot. i think i found what the problem is on the abit site... (bios is b8 btw)

6. In case over clock the CPU frequency higher than 180MHz, don't press reset button otherwise the system will refuse to boot up. It's a auto protect mechanism to prevent possible hardware damage caused by abnormal working environment.

now my question.... how do i bypass the protection mechanism or reset the board so i can use it again??? ive followed the instructions in the manual to the letter... move the jumper, take out the battery, disconnect the psu from the mobo, unplug power... everything... PLZ HELP ME!

Try holding down the INS key when powering on the computer. It may take a few tries but it might work.

Do you have a generic low powered PSU, 300W & below, to power up the board? Try that with minimum components.

Unhappy

tried that also sonny, laid it on its antistatic bag, only had the psu, cpu, ram, and video connected... and the speaker (to get post code)

its giving me 1 long beep and 2 short, i know nothing is wrong with the video card(s) they all work in a seperate test machine.

ive cleared the bios every possible way. have any of you kd7 users had the same problem? if so how did u remedy it? if i ever get this thing working, im gonna personally destroy my reset button.

Well I had something like it. After 2 weeks of using it & the last 5 days were of Prime95 stability tests my KD7 would not get a signal to the AGP but a weak PSU would get it to post no problems 'cause for some odd reason my Enermax 431W just would not work with it anymore. With the cheap PSU I flashed the BIOS to C8 & now it works again with the Enermax. I can't explain it but that's what I got.

It's going to be a trial & error thing at best so it maybe a good idea for you to bring the board to the shop if they have more parts to play with.

took it in and tried a few psu's on it... a 145 watt and a 250watt... no go on either... i was wondering something else... when a comp starts up, does it read the floppy drive (to reflash), even if it doesnt post? i mean if i attach a floppy drive and have a boot disk in, or disk with bios software on it, would it post?

i remember reading somewhere if a bios flash goes wrong the last 2 sections of the bios can be used to boot and reflash so u dont have a bad board... would that work here???

if i remove the bios chip, and put it back in would that reset it?

does anyone have any other unorthadox methods to clearing the bios??

The Boot block. You should be able to flash it if you make a recovery floppy that will automatically flash after it boots from the floppy. I can mail you one if you like. Another thing to try would be to use a PCI video card since the default display device is a PCI adaptor.

i forgot to mention in an earlier post, those 3 video cards used to test it were a gf4 ti4200 (agp) a gf2 ti (agp) and a voodoo rush (pci)
comp wont boot with any of them..

comp wont boot with the pci vid card in any slot.

if i take the ram out i get a ram error, so i guess thats good.

edit :: is there any way i can flash the bios if the comp wont post?

kind of a dumb question, but if i got the board from newegg, shouldn't i rma through them?

this board is the 2nd board (already rma'ed once) from newegg.
if i do end up rma'ing in the end, im gonna cut the freaking wires on my reset button

if i cant figure something out by monday the 27th im rma'ing again.
I AM NOT GIVING UP!
