Faulty P4 ?

Here is the sandra cpu arithmetic test run at stock speed/voltage, on a P4 2.4B. I repeated the test many times and I get the same result. I there a problem with the ALU units ? What tests can I run to check that ?

No, if there were something wrong with the ALU units on the chip the benchmark wouldn't run at all.

This looks more like a some-other-program-(or XP)-is-messing-you-up kind of problem. Make sure there are _no_ other programs running when you do the benchmark. You might also check that all of your memory settings are optimized in your BIOS.

no other programs are running except for explorer.exe and the system stuff. Memory was 2-3-3-6 but 2-2-2-5 doesn't change anything. Increasing vcore doesn't help. It's very strange that I get the good results for the other tests (fpu and multimedia) so I think the ALU units are someway throttled down...

No two CPU's are alike...

To be perfectly honest, the cpu is the last component I would suspect. Anything from Windows, Sandra, drivers, BIOS, even memory could cause that slight performance discrepancy.

If you see problems in multiple benchmarks, I would recommend finding someone with a similar setup to yours (including the OS), and doing a comparison. If the Sandra interger score is the only issue, I wouldn't worry about it.

there are two things I don't understant about this CPU:
1) the sandra score problem
2) it won't go higher than 18x150@1.6v and it's a C1...

i'm fairly sure it's motherboard related, nothing to worry about at all.

Not all C1's (not all CPU's for that matter) are great overclockers. It is simply luck of the draw. My current 2.53 C1 won't run stable (in Prime 95) anything over 145 FSB. It's not getting too hot under load, 53 degrees. I'm sure cooling will help a little but I know this CPU will never run very high speeds and be stable no matter what cooling I use.

I think it's the same issue in Sandra, not all CPU's are the same. The motherboard, among other things, can have an effect on the results as well.
