Windows XP Home Upgrade

hey all , i was woudnering if i HAVE to install a prev windows OS befor putting the XP in. I know it says to so it can overwrite the stuff but i it possible to start the xp proggy on boot and then make it ask for me to pop in a Windows OS cd so it knows i have it?

i have ME on my machine here [new machien i have no os] and i have the ME cd but its for a POS dell and Emachine pc so i cant use it / wouldnt even wana use it to upgrade with. so a friend is given me 98 to use as a base os to upgrade on [so i could save 100$ on xp]

i just dont feal like putting 98 on here and then xp , but if thats the only way it will work i will of course.

thanks or eny help

As far as i know you should be able todo a clean install with the upgade xp and use the 98 as a refrence for it, it always worked with the me upgrade that I had, worst case is that you have to install 98 so you might as well try it. Good luck.

Myst.

As far as I know of to use the Upgrade XP CD you have to have a OS already installed such as 98 or ME or 2000. I have never tried it but I am almost shure that you have to have a version of Windows already installed that can work with the upgrade CD.

Mystikal is right. I have done it many times with XP home. I do a format of the hard disk, the load the win xp cd. It will tell you it doesnt detect a OS and will ask you to insert the win 98-ME disk. do that then it will let you install xp.
