cat 5 cable problem

cat 5 cable problem


Well OK I have a Toshiba cable modem, a Network Everywhere (a dividion of Linksys) router, and a comp with a NIC in it. I bought several CAT5 cables and all work when I connect from the NIC to teh cable modem directly.
Problem arises when I use a router. Only two cables that I have work (our of like 5), all are CAT5. The others don't send a signal to the router (from the cable modem) or from the router to the comp.
Are there different kinds of CAT5 cable? What should I look for?

It may be the cable between the modem and router need to be a cross-over cable.

This is how a Cross-over is wired:

Also try wiggling the connectors after plugging them into the router. Some cables/connectors don't match perfectly, and a good wiggle (is that a technical term?) will help seat them correctly.

What are the model numbers for the equipment? This would be helpful in assisting with your problem.

Whether you need a cross over cable or not doesn't depend on the machine it depends on what layer of the OSI model the device is on. It is entirely possible for a router and a computer to be on the same level of the model and need a crossover cable.

Some cable modems are in fact small computers and technically reside on the same level of the OSI model as your desktop computer and will require cross-over cables.

Well according to the documentation of the cable modem you need to use a crossover cable to connect to the router. The router document defers to the needs of the cable or dsl modem as to the use of the crossover cable.

If the cable currently being used to connect to the cable modem and the router have the same colors pin for pin, that is when you look at the RJ-45 plugs, then it is a straight thru cable. And is the wrong cable to use. If the colors match the diagram I posted earlier then that is a crossover cable and should be used. If a crossover cable is in use then there is more troubleshooting to be done.

Have you verified that all of the lights on the modem are indicating connection to the network? Have you veified that the modem is getting an IP address as assigned by the cable company?

did it work after you installed the crossover cable, because i am going to buy the same router and have the toshiba pcx2200 modem

you use the same kind of cable to connection the toshiba to nr041 as you would the toshiba to a NIC. it should be a normal patch cable.
