is it commonplace for pc games(gta3,nhl2002 in particular) not to support force feedback? the reason i ask is i have never felt my gamepad vibrate outside of the driver functionality test.

Never had my game pad do it. Only in the old starwars podracer. game thats it. Most of the time I think it would be annoying for my game pad do be vibrating. Maybe thats just me. I am tired and rambling right now so I will shut up.

not in my case :) .. my gravis xterminator would vibrate on need for speed 2: hot pursuit .. and I love it a lot :) .. gives a bit more realism touch to the game :) ..

you can turn the feedback function on/off just so you know :)
