single board computers

i remember seeing someone mention these, and thought that they might be useful to us.

http://www.ibase-i.com.tw/FAQ.htm

a p4 that small, where we could fit like 5-6 procs in the same box would be "uber l33t" to say the least. can anyone provide more information on these, or pricing? are these more cost-effective than say getting 6 complete boxen with the same proc?

I don't know about the particular ones you've linked to. But I do know of a few series of industrial micro-component builds, used in weather stations, building-complexes etc.. Many of those take up 4-5 U's in a standard 19 inch rack, and can hold 5-6 pc's..

But trust me... you wouldn't be able to pay them, as they are built to stand extreme heat, cold, moisture... they are very robust setups.

You'd be better off with a Yatta build...

Keep an eye out for used blade-servers though. if you want "standard" components, rather than building your own.

Cheers, Flixotide

Yeah, those single board units are plus spendy. You're talking a thousand for like 700Mhz.

i like this fix for your idea, and it is powered by 12 volts , just grabe a yy cube and put in once system in the normal spot, and fill up the other 5 inch bays with the p4 solution offered by littlepc, and you could have 12 p4 computers in 1 case

well, the sbc thing fell through, but i have an extremely promising lead. this lead is in the form of "blade" servers. this seems to be a thing that would greatly benefit the team, this technology must mature though, and standards must be developed for interoptibility before we can take full advantage of this.

here is ibm's version:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/eserver/xse...er_family.html

in brief, it is a bunch of nodes in an enclosure that allows the nodes to share a common powersupply, cd roms, floppies and stuff. all is hot swappable. ultra high density, some models already have dual xeons. once more companies get in on the act, price will go down, and open standards will be established, allowing interoptibility. this is when we can utilize them.

AS written above.. blade servers..

keep your eyes peeled for the early pilot models, they'll hit the "used" market within the next year for a pretty sweet tap.

Be however aware of the noise those hogs create. The blade server racks I've been testing were second to none of my other servers when it came to noise..
