Help with mouse

I needed a mouse for my laptop quick and cheap, so I did not have time to order one. I only have usb on my laptop, so I went to this local store and they had no usb mice, but they had a ps2 to usb adapter. I bought it and was very happy because I have 2 ps2 mice I can use for my laptop. I plugged everything in on my windows xp laptop and it won't work. Tried it with both mice and still nothing. It does not recognize the device, ARG!!! I tried to get generic drivers, but xp won't allow it (when I uncheck show compatible hardware it does not show anything). What should I do?
