It can't be done. I tried for about 4 months. D3D drivers, patches, reinstall after reinstall... It's coding does not like the NT kernal at all.
The best error is when the crosshair dissappears in battle.

It can be dont. I don't know what's wrong with yours, but I don't have to do anything different when installing UT under XP than in 98 or ME.

hmm i threw it in my pc the week before unreal 2 came out... loaded up and played just fine (xp pro), could try patching it up if not make sure you have the latest drivers for all your stuff ( i was using last official dets and direct x 9 though the latter shouldnt have anything to do with it)

I have the Unreal Gold version, which came with the Return to Na Pali expansion (in case it makes a difference), and was already had the latest patch level.

Works great for me under Win2K Pro, with the quibbling issue that once in a while it will yield errors much like the one you posted-- if I alt-tab out of the game. Not perfect, but I'll live.

All of my buddies and I up until about 3 weeks ago played UT on the LAN for hours at a time, and we all have XP. Do you have the updates from Microsoft? I know that a lot of game issues where fixed in service pack 1 in the Windows Updates.

I think they are talking about Unreal, not UT

Gotcha. Thats right, Unreal was the storyline version before "Unreal Tournament" came out. That one may not work with an NT based OS. I am sure that there is probably a workaround for it though.

I too have tried many times and have never gotten it to work in XP. Really upsetting as I've been wanting to play it.

Try changing the render to Open GL rather than D3D. I installed a new graphics card (9700pro) and could'nt run above 75fps (old card was a 32mb sdr radeon that oc'ed gave me 120fps) then it kept crashing every time I started a game.

Once I switched to open gl frames rates went up and no more crashes.

Hope this helps

The original Unreal engine builds (the ones used in Unreal and UT) were designed to run under OpenGL, with D3D thrown in for people who owned "out-dated" nVidia cards. This was back when developers believed 3dfx would eventually be king.

Hahahahaha.
