is it bad to change the mhz of my ram? i have 1gb of centon memory (2 256 and 1 512mb). i'm assuming they are 2100 so that's 266mhz. cpu is amd 2400xp +, my FSB at 144, cpu mult at 15x, vcore at 1.7, mb is asus a7v8x. if i have the setting of the memory mhz at "auto", it freezes up when i play some games like rtwc. but if i have it set to 288 or higher, the games at 3dmark run fine. will it be bad for the ram to raise it's mhz. will i see some symptoms that tell me it can't handle the mhz i am setting it at.

run prime95 to test for cpu and ram stability. whats your specs?

as you can tell i'm a newb here just trying to get my feet wet with this ocing stuff. so i'm taking it one small step at a time.

well, i'm running prime95 now. specs are below...

asus a7v8x mb
amd 2400xp + (running at 15x mutiplier w/ 143 fsb now) w/ volcano 9 heatsink and fan
1024 mb pc2100 centon ram taken from another pc of mine (2 256mb and 1 512mb)...current mhz is 288.
9700pro vid
80gb wd 8mb cache hd
3 case fans....1 infront going in, 2 in top rear going out.
current temps: idle 35c. while playing rtwc 42-43c.

i may change my ram...was thinking of either going with kingston or crucial. but i wanna see and know what the capabilites of these ram sticks i have. i don't wanna make a waste out of 1gig of memory.

if i lower my cpu multiplier to say 12 or 13.5 and raise the fsb to over 150, the motherboard warns me that my ram mhz should be at least 333. so, i was wondering if it was safe to bump up the ram mhz to that level.

alright...prime95 keeps giving me errors.

[Sun Feb 16 20:49:24 2003]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.4996572435, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
[Sun Feb 16 21:00:18 2003]
ERROR: ILLEGAL SUMOUT
Possible hardware failure, consult readme.txt file, restarting test.

does anyone know what this means. i'm assuming it's my memory since i haveit set higher than what it should be and based on reviews, centon is not that good for ocing.

anyway, decided to order some new ram....i hope kingston 2700 is better than what i have now. ordered 2 512mb for $87 each. i will put back the centon ram on my other pc once i get the kingston. even if kingston isn't that much better than centon, it'll be running 333mhz which is better than the 286 i'm runing now.

errors in Prime95 means your current setup is not stable.
one thing is true having multiple sticks of ram complicates OCing cause they might not run at the same high fsb since they are PC2100. Going wit PC2700 at least u know go gonna run at 166fsb. Also u could try raising the Vcore to make it stable.
When u get those PC2700 try set it @ 13x166 with 1.75v-1.85v thats a good start. then run Prime95 again. Good luck and happy OCing :D
