I just want to scream bloody murder. So whats the deal with all these new on the market generic psus. i understand that the compentition is going to drive good PSUs prices down. I mean i check pricewatch for a psu and get 5 pages of CRAP. I see a new problem for us computer techs, power problems. there are going to be more people with comp problems i.e. reboots, freezing low rails crashing systems. it is a mess. just think if the masses that buy non socialist computers (i.e dell, gateway ,hp) they will spend hundreds to crooked techs fixing problems that don't lie in the computer hardware (mobo, ram, cpu) but an alusive problem POWER.

I own two Antec true 550s and a smart 350. And many other good brands. When i opened them up there were mounds of good electronic pieces. When i opened my latest generic psu it was hollow and barron. Granted my Antecs are .25v under spec for the rail, but cleaness and relibility of power is great. What does it all mean. Are computers getting less picky of power needs? Or do they no longer need as clean power?

Am i all wrong where i think? What are your opinions about generic psus? is this just a natural trend in any comsumer market? First there were a few TV maker giants.... great quality then generic TV sets were produced..... a flood of crap systems. yet there is a balance. i now competition is essential in economics but somewhere i lose my vision and can not see clearly, i am mean not at all.

More room inside for the cockroaches to stretch out?

I have a 300W that seems to perform pretty well and probably stayed within spec at its 195W combined power rating (I tested at 190W, but my accuracy is probably no beter than 3%). However, I did this test only after stacking a second diode pack to its +5V output (empty space on circuit board for it) because the one diode pack was rated for 30A, the same as the +5V rail's rating.

I'm a big believer in the PSU as the backbone of a stable system. Generics are made and sold because there is a huge market, not only OEMs, but consumers in general, lookin for the cheap way out. All that crap will eventually lead people to buying quality.

i just built a dually and my pc alert monitor system (sofwtare) is giving me some type of power warning. it says that the -5V is only at -5.69 and this is hilghlited in red. dont know what this rail means or how sever the problem is. but i am getting the idea that i should not- cannot add or overclock my rig until i get a good psu?

i bought a generic brand, from lasky, hawkeye, something like that. it is rated at 400w and 430w peak. it does not display the combined 3.3 +5 volts on the side panel.

i should return this psu asap?

what the hell is going on? everything is in the red now. my cpu temps are hitting 176F! is this a program glitch?

the fans are spinning at less than half their rate..

are these signs of a poor psu?

Too much load on the +12V?

I've seen -5V and -12V way off even though nothing was really wrong with the PSU, but loading each with 100 ohm resistors (1/2W for the -5V, 5W for the -12V) sometimes corrects them. With many supplies it's enough to load just one of these because the -5V is driven by the -12V.

ahh, nevermind. i re-installed that pc alert program and everything is ok. but still the -5v rail is right on the border line, reading at -5.54 v

youre right, ive had the same thoughts about generic cr*p psu´s, i bought a new cabby a while ago, i smacked my system in it, it posted and gave me a BSOD as the first :) ok, i formattet reinstalled win, woow it worked, but then i started ut2k3 and it got stuck, i rebooted and the problem repeated, the one day, it said BOOM and there was my cpu :)
so now i have a antec true 480 trueblue and it was worth those 1000 dkkr ($133,3) i can only advise all of you to but quality :)

Say bye bye crappy reandom reboots, my raidmax 350 watt is going to hell. Here comes my new sparkle! w00t!

Don't worry about the -5V and -12V rails, they are a hang~up from the ISA slot/bus (from what I've read on them) and are only in there because the ATX spec is that old ;) ...
PS, In fact I've never seen one read/reported (or on my 3PC's I've owned) that accurate/close before! :D ...
