Lapping the heat sink question

I always hear people recommending to lap the HS but not the cpu's heat spreader.
Wouldn't lapping the heat sink be worthless if your cpu heat spreader isn't totally flat?

The spreader on the P4 is supposed to compress flat when the HS is mounted, so lapping it isn't really needed. There was something about this in one of the articles on the front page a week or two ago I think

OH yeah if you lap the heat spreader you will lose warranty. So its your choice....

overclocking already voids the warenty, so voiding the warenty shouldnt even be an issue...
