The best guide for burning in your AMD cpu.

Ok I'am hearing alot of people asking at least once a week what they should do to burn in there cpu. So what iam about to tell and explain will hopefully give all these people an answer. I maybe wrong in some of these cases but what I'am going on is the imformation giving to me thru these forums and via the internet.

Now on with the burning.

The best time and only time a cpu needs to be burned in is when the cpu is brand new out the box or off the self within a few days maybe weeks of having the cpu installed.

In order to get the best burnin there is a few methods that have been talked about. You should always set the cpu to the lowiest clock speed possible then you need to set the voltage as high as you fell comfortable with . In order to get the most out of the burnin procedure you need to increase the voltage to what ever you think is a safe vcore for your cpu ( I used around 2.0 ).

After increasing the vcore to whatever you fill comfortable with you should run any of the following burnin programs from at least 24 to ? hours.

Seti@home, prime95, folding@home, cpustabtest, toast, cpuburn, 3dmark(looping), totaltest, and any other stress testing programs that use 100% of your cpu.

After your done running which ever test you decided to run for however long (@least 24hours) then you should change you fsb, multiplier, etc, etc, to the best that you can run your cpu stable @.

Now that you have your cpu maxed out @ fsb x multi's = mhz. Keep in mind that after overclocking your cpu to the best stable mhz you need to make sure your temps aren't getting to high when the cpu is @ full load. Now that you have your cpu stable @ xxxxmhz you should now run one of the above mentioned test for another 12 to 24 hours.

Now that you have burned you cpu some more increase the fsb, multiplier, etc etc to where your system is stable once again if you can not reach a higher speed with you processer chances are there is something else holding you back if you do in fact are able to reach a higher speed. then I recommed doing some more burning to you reach your highiest setting that you are satisfied with.

All of the above prcedures and steps to burning in your cpu will be done so @ your own risk. I would not suggest running your cpu at to high of voltage nor at to high of temps make sure you have good cooling.

For those of you that would like to learn more on what really happens when burning in your cpu read the link below.

I think the only thing to add is to elaborate on some of the different methods of burning.. etc...theres about 3 different ways to burn in your cpu, we need to have a poll or something to see which one is most popular, I know this is one thing that confused me when I first started burning! hehe

Sandra is a good one also i just use it for benching myself tho not for burning I know the is a burn in wizard in it somewhere but i prefer prime 95 for myself because it get my cpu hotter then any of the other programs that I have used.

It's not hard to be added to the FAQ, but I have to be notified .

However, you got the process and concept wrong. Read this:

http://people.freenet.de/s.urfer/conditioning.htm

'Lowest clock speed possible, highest safe voltage' it also doesn't matter if it's a 3 year old proc or a brand new one. Lowest clock speed means 5x66mhz if your motherboard supports it, but you get the idea...

Pinky beat me to this,
I appreciate you're trying to help but the concept is totally wrong.

I'd read the link Pinky posted.

Well I was just tring to post a thread that might would answer all these threads people keep asking about burning in there cpu. I did however forget to mention the part on clcoking your cpu to the lowiest clock speed possible but in most peoples case they can only run stock or 100 x whatever which is pertty close to stock speeds anyway.

Copy of my PM response:

I truly appreciate any and all help that comes our way here .

If you read that link, however, you would realize that after all the tech lingo in the article there's more 'down to earth' stuff about overclocking at the end. Basically, that article covers it. If, after reading the article, you feel something was left out, PM me the additional information and I'll add it to our FAQ or forward it on to that article's author.

Side note about the FAQ:

The real problem is that no one reads the FAQ sticky at the top of our AMD CPU section and we're also, as a 'team', not referring to it when these types of FAQ-covered questions are being posted.

You'll notice I do that from time to time: "You will find the answer HERE" linking to the FAQ. I encourage people to look around and read. Spoon feeding information only dumbs-down the pupil. I've always learned more through trial/error and my own research, using the forums for when I get stuck or have specific questions about something. FAQs are the how-tos, the most common stuff, things we get drilled on constantly.

**edit -- clarification -- obviously SOMEONE reads the FAQ, almost 14,000 views in the past 2 months... but it's not seen as a resource, being referred to as one would a tech manual... which was my point**

this all has been covered in the: "To the Noobs: Burn in" thread. can't see why you'd start another one ;/ this is simply a rip-off with typos...

Well I can say I haven't but I do use prime95, memtest, pcmark, 3dmark, cpustabtest, seti@home, folding@home, sandra, and super pi.
