Icon change ??

You mean actually changing it to something else other than the K-gear? KDE3.1 is supposed to have better theming than earlier versions. I don't know if you can just change individual tray or start icons like you can in windows.

You can make them all small and then set it so they zoom/expand when your curser touches them.

Yes KDE 3.1 has great theme support and appears to allow me to change all the icons via the menu editor apart from the KDE start button

Well i'm not familar with KDE, so i can't tell you exactly how to change your icons. But if you go here you can get some really nice icons. I suggest the Noia icons, they are nice. I use thme on my gnome desktop

If you go into the Control Center, under the Themes/Appearance category there is an icon control panel. It will allow you to add or remove icon themes. I suggest using that, and an icon theme of your choice to change the icon.

I don't think that there's a way to change the KMenu icon itself individually, at least if there is, I haven't found it.

This is exactly what I want to do. I have agreat Icon theme but just want to change the K Menu Icon itself.. there must be a way ;)

Here's some things I've found that may be of some help:
http://www.0hassleisp.net/jhall/linux/change-icon.html
http://sunsite.bilkent.edu.tr/pub/linux/www.kde.org/faq/kdefaq-6.html

From what I've pieced together, try going into the ~/.kde3.1/share/icons directory, where you should find a directory for whatever icon themes you have installed. Then, look in those directories for the icon that is currently on your KMenu, and either change that file, or make a symlink to the file you want to use.

If you use something like Konqueor that lets you auto preview the picture files, it will be easier to spot.

Please note that this is 100% theory, and I haven't tried it. Buts its worth a shot I guess.

edit: for me, the image file that is on the KMenu is the following:
~/.kde3.1/share/icons/Noia KDE 0.95/64x64/apps/kmenu.png

That might give you an idea of where to look.

Your theory is sound and works, what you have to do is go to /opt/kde3/share/icons/icon theme name and find the icons called kmenu.png and change that to the desired icon.. because the icons can animate with a mouse over you have to change all sizes of that icon available.
