hi i just bought a second hand board with the cpu still locked in its got thermal grease all over the chip will i have too clean it all up and my new heatsink has a pad on it does this mean i wont need to use thermal greese thanxs

remove the pad thermal compound is always better then a thermal pad.

and yes you should clean the cpu up alittle maybe with some alchoyol.

If I were you I would clean off the cpu with some Acetone or Alcohol. Remove the pad from the HS and get yourself some AS3 compound. Those pads are not known to be the greatest.

Good Luck.

I bought a Third hand Motherboard back in the K6-2 days (ASUS P5A) and it came thermally gouped so I had to pull everything apart, clean and re-apply the thermal adhessive bondo. Best $90 I had ever spent.
