DirectX 9 won't work for some reason? Well you can try looking on all your game discs. Any new games likely have a 8.1 installer on them. Also have you tried windows update? Last time I used windows update (about 1.5 weeks ago, win2k) it still had 8.1 and not 9.

you can get dx 8.1 at fileplanet. if your not a subscriber there will be a wait for a server spot though. also a lot of games have it on the disk check those to.
