A friend of mine has a rig that I built for him

Athlon XP 2000+ (stock not o/c)
2x 256Mb PC2100 (1 is kingston the other is crucial)
60gb 5400rpm maxtor
PNY Verto GeForce4 MX440 SE 64MB 4X AGP
Sb Live! sound (not the value edition!)
Win XP Serv Pack 1

Ok he's had no problems with it so far, its about 6 months old EXCEPT for the fact that when playing certain games (Grand theft auto 3 the only one really) when he's driving the car, the sound starts skipping. At first I thought slow cpu..or needed to defrag the hard drive...or updated sound card drivers...or GTA 3 Patch..

I did all that (upgraded the cpu from athlon 1.2ghz to 2000+), added the extra 256mB ram on there and still skips....

Is it just a dud sound card? it works in everything else (music, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, porn...)

GTA3 music should have skipped because it ran music directly from the CD so it couldn't play the music without it lagging. If you downloaded the GTA 1.1 patch, it gives you an option to run the music directly from the hard drive.

And play around with your audio acceloration. I set mine to emulated, and had all kinds of problems. If it's not currently at full accelloration, do it.

And do the upgrade. GTA3 is full of bugs on the PC. My only beef with that game.

Also like to mention that my sisters computer has a MX card in it and GTA3 is a Fillrate hog which the MX cards simply dont have. Even the good ole GTS GeForce2 has better fill rate and runs GTA3 alot smoother.

A simple upgrade to a GeForce4 TI 4200 or Radeon 9500 Pro would also kill the skipping problem if it exists.
