My first post..

I have an old Pentium III 1GHz and am waiting for the new P4 800MHz FSB CPU's with a Springdale motherboard.

My question is:

Do I have to re-install Win XP Home after I swap the motherboard?

I know that i have to enable HT in the BIOS, but I read somewhere that I would have to re-install the OS after enabling HT in the BIOS.

I currently have Win XP Home installed on the P III system.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

Welcome to the forums.

Usually when you change motherboards it's a good idea, if not completely necessary, to reinstall the OS as most of your base drivers will have changed. XP might handle serious hardware changes better older OS's, but there's still a chance it won't boot after you change the board.

If you want HT, it's best to reinstall so XP can load the correct SMP modules.

you don't really have to do new instalation, just try to "refresh". i had to do this when changing from msi6337le5 & pIII1100 to current rig.

dont quote me on this but somewhere i heard or read that HT was only supported by XP pro version or something like that.

Both XP Pro and XP Home support HT. You need to install SP1 to get the best performance with it though.

800 fsb should really improve memory performance

In my experience, changing mobo's on any version of windows generally goes pretty smoothly as long as it's the same brand of chipset...ie changing from an Intel chipset to another Intel chipset, Via to a Via, and so on. Even going from like a 440bx to an 810 or an 845 even, or switching from AMD to Intel (given both old and new boards use Via chipsets, or both use SiS). Just been my experience :>

thanx!!!!

i've been looking for that type of source for very long now

Try it without reinstalling - if it doesn't work, then reinstall.

I've done it before without. It gets tricky if you're using RAID and/or SCSI disks.

If we look at the cost of the most expensive desktop chip over time, $637 isn't that bad.

And just because it's 00:30 and I'm not tired you get a graph:

hey i like that graphic. thanks!

With AMD's Athlon 64 not due out for several months, it doesn't make sense for Intel to push for higher frequencies on their current manufacturing process as doing so would become fairly challenging given the thermal and power requirements of >3.2GHz clock frequencies. Instead, Intel is focusing on improving the overall performance of the Pentium 4 platform through the new chipsets we mentioned above coupled with an increase in FSB frequency.

so according to this we aren't going to see any major increases in Ghz until the Athlon 64 comes out. when is that going to happen? i'd like to see how high intel is willing to go right off the mark. 3.2 is a bit underwhelming ...

Nice figure JCLW!!!

You can try installing the new system and making the first boot inside safe mode and remooving all old components in the control pannel. Then just reinitiate windows and give him the new stuff... that worked for me once a long ago with out problems... Just becouse I´ve had an already vry tunned OS and wouldn´t like to configure allllll that again... If you do the correct register and hd mainteinance and drivers updating, the system goes smooth for years, if you do not and all is messed up, reinstalling is considered...
In case of any problems, reinstall offcourse... You can try not to... No cost.... :)
