Temps for Tualatin-S 1.4ghz

I'm just curious what people are getting for temps with this chip using the stock cooler (other coolers are fine too - info is always great) and stock speed.

I'm getting 48C idle, and 52C full load. This seems really strange to me.

I've got a homebuilt case with 4X120mm fans (two on top for the radiator that isn't mounted yet ) one in the front, and one in the back right behind the cpus, and it flows STRAIGHT through .

Obviously the interface is suspect, but I have checked, rechecked, and checked again, and I'm doing a near perfet job of it. Arctic Alumina, and I've tried different thickneses, spreading with a razorblade. I always get the same results. 1C gain from spreading it as thin as possible, but then it's still 51C at load with a CPU that is only making 35W .

The tualatins have the IHS, so checking the core with a probe can't be real great. The BIOS reports the same idle as the MSI monitor, so one could assume the load temp is accurate too.

Any input is welcome

I just put together the same set up (the msi and dual PIII 1.4s 1GB DDR) but it’s air cooled with volcano 6+'s and it runs at 35-38C each. IU did use AS3 and I lapped the IHS + heat sink (copper cores). I have not done very long testing as I am getting rid of it real soon so I stopped testing it. It’s in a Black TT-461 case w/ 3 80mm fans 1 side 2 front no rear but vented to take 2-80 or 1-120. You could test your temps with a cheap rat shack thermal probe for like $10 or so also check your water temp your problem could be the water blocks / cooling system if the temps are right

I had a 1.4@151 FSB for a while on a TUSL-2C using an AX7 for cooling my load temp was around 46C, stock speed was around 38C load if I remember right

My test rig is running a PIII-S 1.4 with the stock Intel HSF. Temps are mid 30°C at idle, low 40°C range at Prime95 load. Ambient is low 70°F range.

If I OC it to 150FSB load temp goes to mid 40°C range, idle stays the same.

My server is running a PIII-S 1.4 undervolted to 1.25V with an SLK-800 + 7-volted Panafo M1A on it. Idle runs in mid 30° range, Prime95 load is in the low 40°C range. This is in a case with one 5-volted 120mm Panaflo L1A as the case fan. System is extremely quiet.

I think your temp is a little too high for stock speed, even if you are using stock cooling. I would say you should be at least 4C lower than what you're at right now. There's no way you should be hitting 50C load at stock speed.

I running a P3 1.4-S overclocked to 1715 @ 1.65v
Cooling is SLK-800 and Tt SF2 @ 3200rpm. I removed the IHS on mine and it operates up to 6C cooler than when the IHS was on. When I removed my IHS I noticed the white thermal paste underneath it had almost completely worn out, the cpu die was probably only half covered! Now I get high 30's on idle and low-mid 40's on load. The SLK-800 rocks, it really performs at it's best when in direct contact with the cpu die.

Thanks everyone, I put a compunurse probe next to the IHS under the heatsink, and get a reading of 37C idle, and 39C load. I'm not sure how much it should be compensated since the probe can't touch the core.

Stedeman: It's not on water just yet. Have to wait for my blocks to get here . Still on the intel HSFs.

paulie:
When I spread the compound extremely thin, it didn't quite contact in the middle when I pulled the heatsink off. It was maybe 2-3mm square where it didn't touch. Now I could be wrong, but I think the P4 IHS is the same way, but gets flattened by the extreme clamping pressure. Intel's spec is something like 100lb of force. I know the clamp for my tualatins is nothing even close to that, so you may be onto something by removing the IHS. Plus what you said about the poor goop under it.

I forgot to mention earlier, my Vcore is 1.44 as reported by the BIOS. Should really get the multimeter out. I don't trust any readings that come from this board anymore.
