Are you on dial up? I have had dial up modems that pause everything for a second sometimes.

Run the drive diagnostic program from WD. That will let you know if it is already bad and needs to be RMA'd. Jusat so you know this is no guarantee that it will not die tommorow even if it tests good. I had a WD se drive do something similar. I ran the diagnostic and it had some minor problem I RMA'd it and they were very quick about sending a replacement Just back up anything that you do not want to lose. Good Luck!

Send the manufacturer an email about it, describing the problem in detail, and see what they say. Maybe it's something they're aware of and they'll suggest you RMA it even if it passes diagnostic testing.

I don't kow if this sounds like the same thing a1cnolan, but my WD makes a sound like it's comming out of sleep mode: *CLICK BzzzzzZZZZZ* you know the sound, but I don't get a pause or anything and so far no data loss, go figure.

i dont know why your hearing it from the back, maybe echo, but your hard drives should be making that sound on startup/down and a warm boot

hey guys. just checking up. i emailed Western digital. i told them i ran the datalifeguard thing and it said everything was okay but that my hard drive is still operating slowly and that i still get that click and momentary hang. they sent me an email back saying to try their datalifeguard utility. so yeah they aren't any help.
i reformatted and installed the via bus master driver. and i cannot get my WD to operate in udma100 or mode 5 only 66. so i dunno. is there anyway to force this? i tried using the advanced tab under the ide channel properties but the advanced tab was gone

I would call them and tell them again. See where that gets you. Sometimes you have to try a few different people some just suck. Or you can even go to the next level imediately ask for a manager. That is what I usually do anyways the first person to answer the phone rarely has any power to do anything for you

Well just make sure that your motherboard actually supports mode5, because of course not all of them do, and you can't force the ones that don't support it.

Also this may be a long shot, but make sure your harddrive isn't powering down. Check your power management settings, and turn the HDD power down time off so it never does and see if that fixes it. You can adjust it accordingly afterwards, but disable the powerdown feature for now.

It just sounds like your drive is powering down, then it's accessed and it needs to spin up again, which will create the clicking sound, and the pause.
