MY ISP wont let me use 2 puters for DSL

One day I came home and Found my Connection was dropped(DSL 1.2). I could not connect so I phoned and was told that they had a policy that was not enforced until now where two computers could not connect to the same line on a HUB
So I had to have the 2nd computer connect directly to the main puter.

I still use the HUB for networking but My ISP reccomended a router. I prefer not to buy one as I just bought a hub and dont want to spend anymore money so my roomie can use the internet on the 2nd puter.
Can anyone explain(in really really simple terms..think Homer Simpson) why I cannot have the 2nd puter connect directly to my dsl line thru the hub?

2nd..I did a speed test and my DSL is still the same(about 900kbps). Will the other computer suck up my bandwidth, it seems slower to me...any suggestions?

Well, ok lets see now....

1st - Ur ISP does not like 2 IP's on the 1 connection, so u get a router/software router and u use that, so it only shows 1 IP address...

2nd - Yes the second computer will suck up bandwidth when it is in use.

3rd - Just use what u are using now, a software router so ur ISP is all happy, it should not cause any problems.

Generally, it is to save your ISP some money. Every IP that they use costs them money, as when they run out, they have to go and buy more. Giving out one per account is a very easy way to limit that expense.

As for bandwidth, it is per-modem. Your modem can upload and download at a certain speed. No matter how many computers you have connected, it will still only go so fast.

However-- having only one IP address will cause some people not to buy 2nd PCs or whatnot, some people might not hook the other one up because of the 1 IP rule. A router may be an expense that some people can't come by, etc. Therefore, less computers are hooked up, less people can simultaneously use the internet, and less traffic = save money for ISP.

To add on to this, whatever bandwidth your modem can handle is split between the connections. If both computers are browsing the internet at the same time, it will divide the total bandwidth between the 2 computers. I'm not sure if it's half or by priority, but just the same, your connection will be split between the 2 computers.
The speed in your second computer(that's not directly connected) might be going slower because it has to pass through the first one and be processed through the NIC and the information has to go through that system for ICS to process and route it. I've never used ICS before, but I'm assuming that this is the case.

btw he was using ICS

You could slap a 2nd NIC in your machine and use Win2k ICS. It's like a mini-DHCP service. We usually do that at LAN parties, and it works great!

Both rigs have onboard lan but I am using Nic cards instead. So basically I can turn on the onboard lan and this wont conflict w/ the nic?

Can you guys give a little more detail...if this saves me buying a router and improves bandwidth/speed between 2 computers I am all for it. keep in mind that i am still using a HUB.

Thanks again

Yeah you can turn on the onboard nic in the main rig and it will not conflict with the second one. The first one in the line will just be running ICS and like Oni said will act like a dhcp server in a sense.

It won't conflict as long as they are assigned different IRQs. It won't improve your bandwidth...rather, it will just allow you to split your bandwidth between the two computers. As was pointed out earlier, using ICS, especially while the "server" computer is under load, might slow down or even kill the connection of the second computer. You will still be able to share the internet, however. It's a nice alternative when you can't afford to buy a router.

Ok, I have a question here.. and this might be the place to help me..

I have DSL, One DSL modem, One 4 port hub, and 2 computers (mine, and my roomates).

The problem is.. he likes to download music.. like.. 24/7, and Im sure if there were more hours in a day, and more days in the week, he would use all those up too. His constant downloading affects the speed on my computer, and Im almost to the point where Im going to sabotage his computer.. lol

What Im getting at is... would there be a way to limit the bandwidth to his room? Or something to help keep my bandwidth up while hes downloading?

Maybe this needs a new thread, but I will try here first.

If you can get him to install a bandwidth controller and configure it, then your home free. If not, then politely ask him to limit his download speeds during certain hours (whenever your online). Most apps come with the ability to limit your download and upload speeds..

Nice.. maybe I will just configure it for him when hes out someday. Then when he says "Man, is your internet slow too?".. I will just nod and say, "Yep.. darn'd DSL".
