flased BIOS and now it's 9700pro?

I just flashed my 9500pro with the 9500_30.bin to unlock the clocks, but now hardware manager is seeing it as a 9700pro. Is this normal? I go into powerstrip and it shows the 9500pro default speeds so it must be ok I'm just wondering if it should be read this way?

WOW I just ran 3dmark2001 and got a huge perfomance boost at default speeds. Only problem is it drops my desktop to 800x600 and 8bits when I exit the program. After the flash are you supposed to install 9700 drivers?

What your card is identified as under the device manager really means nothing. The only thing the hacked BIOS files do for the clock locked ATI cards is to change the device hardware ID for your card. When the hardware device ID of a 9500 pro changes from a 9500 pro to - say a 9700 pro, then naturally overclocking becomes possible because the 9700 pros are not clock locked.

Make no mistake. The 9500 pro cards can NOT be modded into 9700 pro cards like the 9500 non-pro cards (this is physically impossible for the 9500 pro cards). The big gains that you got from the BIOS that you just used must have either come from the set clock speeds of the BIOS or the memory timings.

Check Powerstrip to see what your clock speeds are reported as right now. The BIOS file you used might have been clocked 9700 pro speeds.

EDIT: Eh, nevermind. I just re-read your post and realized that you are saying you got huge gains at default clock speeds. I am really sleepy and about to go to bed so I guess I am not able to pay attention any more today.

I am puzzled about this phenomenon though.

For the drivers, you shouldn't need to change them. As I said above, the BIOS file you used couldn't have changed your 9500 pro to a 9700 pro and besides, the only differences between the 9500 pro and the 9700 pro cards are the 128 vs 256bit bus and the clock speeds. Other than that, these cards are identical and use the same R300 core.

Yes, I would recommend reinstalling drivers, in super nietendos thread( which by the way is a very imformative one) he recommended resetting drivers to windows generic, flashing then reinstalling the drivers for best performance and the flash does nothing more than allow the memory and core clocks to become unlocked.

Yeah, strange huh? I know you can't flash the 9500 pro to a 9700 pro like you can the 9500 non pro which is why I don't understand the 3dmark boost. Powerstrip is showing 9500pro default speeds, but when I run 3dmark at 1024x768x32bit I was getting 79**(13*** with everything turned down) and now at the same 1024x768x32bit I'm getting 10***. Does anyone know why the flash would do this? During the 3dmark run it's showing it to be running it at the default settings(1024x768x32bit), but after the run and returning to the desktop it resets my desktop to 800x600x8bit. I'm happy with the score, but a little confused.

*EDIT*: OK now I'm thoroughly confused. I just got a 10307 in 3dmark, but no change to the desktop this time. Whatever, I'll take it. If anyone wants to use the 9500_30 or 9500_33 BIOS for the Infineon memory go here and get it. Have fun

Hmmm, truly weird! Now, I think about it, if your display resolution is changing every once in a while (like after running 3DMark), then it is possible that the drivers have gotten messed up so a resinstall could help.

I think you should ask if Evnas would like to try this BIOS because he has a 9500 pro and I think he could figure this thing out. If I were you, I would PM him about this.

I don't have a 9500 pro so unfortunately it's not possible for me to do any testing with this BIOS.

Thats a good idea Black_Paladin. I'll send him a PM.

*EDIT*: Done. Lets see if he gets the same results.

9500 Pro...........128 bit
9700 Pro...........256 bit

No way could a 9500 Pro be BIOS modded to a 9700 Pro.

It's the new version ie: memory inline. I'm not saying it modded it into a 9700pro because it's impossible I just got some strange results with the flash. Keep in mined I'm not complaining about the performance boost, but I can't explain it either. I guess we'll wait to see if Envas gets the same results.

I just received Envas reply and he has the Hynix memory so that wont give the same results. Anyone have a Infineon card they want to flash?

I have the infinion memory, I think I have tried that one without any trouble but if you wanna send it send it to mamer@webryders.com and I will try it for you, I also have a 9500 pro.

-mamer

Edit, now that I followed your download link I can say yes I have flashed and run that one without any problems or abnormalities seen, overall it seemed to be very stable, I am currently running the 95pro128 bios.

Heh, I wish I had a 9500 pro to try this BIOS, LOL!

[RANT]
I actually want to get a 9700 pro when the prices drop but the stupid prices JUST WON'T DROP! Grrrrr.

I mean it feels like the 9700 pros have been around for a century and they STILL cost $300+ at most places (cheapest ones are about $270 or so but I like buying cards only from the reputable vendors like Newegg, Googlegear, etc.).

Get one off EBAY Black_Paladin. Not sure if you dig doing that, but it's where I got my 9700 PRO originally, and that was for $310 when they were at the $400 price point. I frequently see them on ebay going to $210ish, from sellers with excellent reps, ATi boxed and everything, brand new.

Heh, I have been looking for 9700 pros on EBAY for a while but I seem to have no luck. Every single card that I found went for $300 or more which I found really ridiculous because you can get a 9700 pro for $300 from ATI directly with free shipping now!!!

Some of the people that bid for stuff on EBAY seem to be lunatics to me. They will pay $120+ shipping for a WD hard disk that costs $100 on Newegg (free shipping). Anyway, perhaps I should keep looking.
