I put together a computer, with new componenets except an old working PCI videocard. At first I am having trouble installing Windows, I thought it was the harddrive since the jumpers were set incorrectly, but later I discovered other weird things under DOS and the BIOS. I put the jumpers in the correct position and booted up the computer. Then, in the Windows installation, it aborted with this weird message (black screen white text):
//begin error screen
a disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to áestartf
f_
//end error screen
(It looked exactly like that with the weird symbols)
I tried to boot up again and got this a full page of weird codes (black screen white text):
//begin error screen
~TRAP 000000000000000000000000000000000000000
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
tr=0020 cr0=000000000000000000000000000000000
gdt limit=03FF base=000000000000000000000000000
//end error screen
(the first few lines looked like that)
I tried putting the HD in another computer and dumped a Win98 image, just to test if it's broken, and the HD works fine, actually booting up Win98 properly on that computer. But putting the HD back to the new computer, I booted up to get this message:
//begin error screen
Windows NT has found only 6o»k of low memory. 512k of low memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer.
//end error screen
At that point I reset the CMOS. Afterwards, I found the BIOS menu was very slow, delaying about a second for menu changes. Finally I saw this under the CPU settings in BIOS:
"CPU External Frequency (Mhz) [[2ģ¶±Ì|ģ|]
where the 2ģ¶±Ì|ģ| are just a bunch of gibberish that looks like that.
OK, any ideas? Other than the obvious (that I am screwed.)
[Update: I took out the harddrive and the gibberish disappeared from the CPU External Freqencu display. But the Award BIOS still seems slow to me... unless it has always been like that.
The computer has only PSU, mobo/CPU and one PC2100 RAM, that's all.]
