if you have a 3 layer network (client connects to 100mbps switch, which connects with dual 1000mbps switch), and you wanted to block someone's MAC address, do you need both switches to be managed, or can just the bigger switch be managed.

Also, what isare the advantages of managed switching?

Yes, MAC addresses may be restricted to a certain port on the switch or excluded from tha switch by editing the attributes of the entry for that MAC address in the MAC lookup table.

By the way Layer 2 is the switched network topology, Layer 3 uses IP addressing (logical), not MAC addressing (Layer 2, physical) addressing for the determination of where packets go.
