Ok I decided to build my own small server comp. Basically it needs to be a stable computert that is 1.7-2.0 ghz and I will probably have two harddrives in it so it can access data and move it around fast along with gigabit ethernet. What's the cheapest you can build one for?

Not sure.

Since you want a pretty powerful pc, I'd get the Epox NF2 w/video and a 1700+ and basically go from there.

does the motherboard really matter that much? I don't plan on overclocking it or anything like that. I would just windows 2000 on it and leave her stable. One thing is SCSI. I look at scsi and see two sides of a story. I see on pricewatch.com that you can get a scsi harddrive for pretty cheap now days vs what they were a year ago. So what is it that makes them so much different? Is it true that they have little microchips on them so they can access info much faster? I just want to make sure that when I host big games on there that it doesn't lag because it can't read the info fast enough. I figure for about $300-400 I can have a good server for what I need. Maybe even slightly less.

I'm building a small server to act as a gateway/firewall for broadband, the specs I have total to less than 200 bucks. But it is not by any means 1.7Ghz:
Onboard 533Mhz VIA C3 Proc on a VIA EPIA MiniITX Motherboard
256mb PC133 SDRAM
Small MiniITX Case
2 gig HD (spare)
32x CD-ROM (spare)

It won't be a game or file server by any means, but I'm sure it will perform NATd perfectly!

today is the first time i have ever seen a C3 proc. I'm going to be looking into that

Here's what I have spec'd out, all my links point to directron.com because thats where I shop.

My Server
-------------------------------
Directron Case 48.99

VIA 533Mhz barebones 92.00
http://directron.com/epia5000.html
256mb PC133 SDRAM 37.99
http://directron.com/dimm128256.html
178.98

I already have a small HD and regular CD-ROM to put in it, I also have a low profile NIC card, so I can have 2 NIC's for gateway/firewall duty.

The VIA EPIA barebones motherboards go up to 1Ghz, here's a link to all the VIA Stuff on directron.

Have fun...

$170 for a c3 1ghz. I don't see how they plan on selling any of those. You can get a 2100+ with motherboard pretty easy for that much.

Well.. first of all it's a mini ITX motherboard, so it's really not competing with the atx motherboards..

second of all.. check what it has, integrated video, tv-out, sound, lan, cpu. All you need is a bit of ram and a hd to go with that and you have a computer.
