yeh thats right we bought a craptiva a while ago now with 300MHz processor running on 100 FSB and with warranty running out in a month or so, rising prices here in oz, and lack of money to spend, i wanna boost the speed of this bitch at least a little bit.

the only probs are:

"newbie-friendly" bios means no advanced options like core speed and FSB can be changed

one stick of ram i have is PC-100 so that might be a prob

its an IBM!! nuff said!

so can i get a speed boost?? i'm guessing not...

K6-2? Well you may be in luck,those don't have a multiplier lock

Check your mobo for the multiplier jumpers.Most mobo makers usually silkscreen the settings on the face of the board,if not that there may be a sticker inside the case with the info.

If all is well then just bump it up to 3.5 and boot her up.If it dosn't then try upping the Vcore to 2.3 or 2.4.

If you're real lucky you might even be able to get her to 450-500

i might whack it open and have a look but i had a good look the other day for voltage jumpers with no luck

its some mobo from the IBM warehouses whatever it might be.. custom made kinda thing not one you would get from a general comp store....

I don't know how much money you are lacking, but it is entirely possible to upgrade your system to a Duron 600 for less than $200. Prices may be higher where you are, but they shouldn't be that much higher.

If you just want a faster computer, you could just buy the cheapest Socket A motherboard you can find and the slowest/cheapest Duron chip. If you want to overclock, you'd have to get either an Asus A7V, Abit KT7, MSI K7TPro2, Epox something. But if money is really tight you could just go economy all the way...

Name brand comps are general not upgrade friendly at all.

well i just found the jumper settings on me MOBO and found this silk-screened on it:

now here: its an AMD K6-2 300MHz CPU SS7 on 100FSB (mobo max, other MHz FSB's avail are 66, 83, 95) and SW2 refers to a dip switch, not jumpers as such.
(this DIP switch thingy has 8 bits on it, the silkscreen only shows 5 bits the other 3 could be covered by this capacitor... not sure. Current setting is
OFF ON OFF OFF OFF OFF ON OFF )

after reading some other posts on here, frying this CPU is NOT an option, tho i know there is the risk. even a 66 MHz gain would make a difference for me at the moment till i buy a second hand 500MHz ss7 CPU from somewhere.

what does anyone make of this?

I feel your pain. I have a Compaq!!! It also has a "newbie friendly" BIOS.

Luckily it had jumper switches. I got it from 250Mhz to 300Mhz easy.

I think u are outta luck with OCing that thing. Just buy a new CPU. an AMD 550Mhz K6-2 is $100 or less.
