im new to using lcds. but ive researhced a bit. i really dont want to buy a matrix orbital for 100 or a crystal fontz for like 90.

so im thinking of DIY. i dont want parallel because i have a printer that uses that. so i heard you have to use things called "backpacks" to convert parallel to serial. most guides dont say anything bout this.

http://www.mpja.com/viewallpict.asp?dept=361&main=122

im thinking that the first one listed there is what im looking for. im wondering how the wiring goes. and how difficult it is (like the whole thing, not just mounting the parallel-->serial)

I did exactly what you're looking to do. Pop over to Crystalfontz's website, and in their forums they've got guides for putting together a backpack based LCD for the SLI-OEM backpack (the one I used) and a few other ones.

Best of luck :)
