I have built AMD machines for a long time because I was building budget PC's and they seemed to have the best bang for the buck.

Now I plan on building an Intel Machine and would like to keep it under 700$ . I've also been out of the loop on current motherboards and so forth and I was wondering if some of you PC experts could help me design. Would ya could ya would ya?

Intel system will revolve around:

- No overclocking (building for a friend, if somethin goes wrong i cant travel to n. cali from s. cali all the time)
- Mobo -> have no clue what the smartest purchase is out there
- ATI Radeon 8500 - 9500 card
- Sparkle 120mm 350 watt power supply
- & other things ( feel free to add in )

And how bout if you AMD experts help me design a system also?

- No overclocking as well
- Mobo --> you decide
- ATI Radeon 8500 - 9500 card
- Sparkle 120mm 350 watt power supply
- & other things _feel free to add_

i dont know mucha bout intel but, maybe since its a no oc you could get a good deal on like a palamino or tbred-a

motherboard, i love my nf7-s, also heard good things about asus
+ epox but those are all the good ocing boards, ive heard the msi boards are good and stable at stock speeds

i personnally would go with a nforce2 board with mcp2-t stepping, (soundstorm)

hmm... well since you really don't have any specific speed for a processor, that leaves the door wide open :)

i would personally go for something like an intel board... i have one and it is very nice (reliable)
a d865PERL ($115) would be a nice board to have. it supports 800 MHz fsb cpus w/HT support, dual channel ddr400, 1 x 8x agp, 5 x pci slots, 2 x serial ata, 2 x ide, 1 x floppy, 4 x usb, 6 channel audio. it would be a very nice board to have. then grab either a p4 2.4b ($161) or a p4 2.4c ($185). then get him a couple sticks of geil 256 MB pc3200 ($38/stick). then a western digital 40 gb 7200 rpm hard drive w/8mb cache ($67), a mitsumi floppy ($7), one of the fun chieftec cases (~$65) and a sparkle 350 watt psu ($38) and for the video, get a xfx geforce4 ti 4200 ($119)

$115 - mobo
$185 - cpu
$76 - ram
$67 - hard drive
$7 - floppy drive
$65 - case
$38 - psu
$119 - video card
===============
$672 + some s.h. (a lot of the shipping is free from newegg so it should be ~$700)

that leaves some extra money if he needs a keyboard or mouse...

i don't know about if he needs a monitor or speakers... :)

no problem :) i love making up systems from parts... of course you can probably find an ati card if he isn't a big fan of nvidia thru newegg's video card search. just put in the chipset of the card and it will pull up the records for em. :)

i tried to pick some stuff that had some potential for upgrading in the future... (like you can add 2 more sticks of 256 MB ram to give him a gig, newest 800 MHz fsb, HT, etc...) heek, i even used a couple of those parts to change my future system i have priced out... the p4 800 MHz chips aren't as expensive as when they first came out if i remember correctly...

good luck with building this system...

i wanna see some more ideas from other people :)

Here's my recommendation for a $700 Intel box (all from newegg):

CHIEFTEC Server Chasis (Aluminum)-N82E16811125210 (64)

Lite On 52x24x52 CDRW-N82E16827106184 (45.50)

MITSUMI D359M3 FDD 1.44MB-N82E16821103104 (7)

WD800JB-N82E16822144122 (83)

(2) Buffalo Technology 256MB PC3200-N82E16820150534 (90)

ABIT IS7-E ,Intel 865PE-N82E16813127156 (99)

Fortron FSP350-60BN-N82E16817104972 (32)

Pentium 4 / 2.6GHz-N82E16819116151 (193)

ABIT GF4 TI4200-8X 64MB-N82E16814123118 (88)

The above comes to $701.50 before shipping, $732.50 after. You can squeez it down near 700 shipped by going with the 2.4C and a 40GB WD, but I don't recommend he try to save that last 30 bucks.

PS-I assumed you wanted a burner in this.

My AMD-powered list

- AMD ATHLON XP 2600 /333 FSB
- SOLTEK SL-75FRN-L/75FRN2-L, nForce2 (SPP+MCP) Chipset
- GAINWARD GeForce 4 Ti 4800SE AGP, 3.6ns, 128MB DDR with VIVO
- Apacer 256MB DDR PC3200 RAM (x2)
- WD400EB 40GB 5400RPM
- CDRW 52X24X52
- 16x DVD-ROM
- floppy
- SPARKLE 350 WATTS ATX
- Speeze FalconRock CPU Fan (GREAT quiet heatsink for non-overclockers)
- EVERCASE E4252W005A(Black) 10-bay Case
- Zalman ZM-F1 80mm Fan with Quiet Mode Adapter (x3)

TOTAL = $684.97 + est. shipping of $35

That's alot of hardware for only $700

whoops, i knew i forgot something :p i didn't put a cd-rom drive in there... burners are like $50 from newegg for a fast liteon
