I have seen shims before, and I am getting ready to install an SLK 800 in a couple of days. I don't think i need one, as my xp 2400 already has 4 black "pads" in the corners of the chip. Am i correct?

The foam pads don't support anything, and won't prevent a core crush.

If you're unsure about mounting it yourself, pick up a chep one that will fit.

Better safe than sorry... I had bad luck with the one I had, but that's just me.

If you are unsure about mounting the sink, don't be talked out of getting one... If nothing more than it's cheap insurance and will let you practice mounting and get the "gist" of it if you're not use to it.

I used to use a thermaltake socket A copper shim .To be honest I noticed very little change in temperateure, in fact without was cooler. However my core did not crush as my Duron coire did with my Thermoengine.
