Question newbie question....

ok this has been bugging me for quite some time and i havent been able to locate anything explaining this. On the specs of a motherboard lets use the Soyo P4S-645D it says it can handle a maximum of 3Gb of memory, now how is that possible. If 1024mb of pc2700 comes in two 512 pieces how can you get 3Gb's on the motherboard.

there is probably some simple explanation that my newbie brain cant figure out..........any help is greatly apreciated
