Ouch man, 3.3ns infineon is generally considered to be the worst you can get, but i've never even heard of 3.6ns infineon! (usually you see 3.6ns hynix, which overclocks much better than infineon chips)

But you never know, it could turn out ok! Is this a card you already own?

Hey

how do I check what kind of ram is on my card? and how much? 2.8/3.3, and how does it make a difference in overclocking? which is better?

what's the best to get for the 9800 np?
does newegg have that?

THANKS :-)

Plenty of questions
Anyway... Just chech your RAM chips. I'm really not sure if there is some universal way of doing it but I try to see for some known numbers

3.6
3.3
3.0
2.8

And yes it will make all the diffierence in the world depending what RAM do you have! Some RAM o/c better and some worse ( Hynix and Samsung are great as a rule of tumb, Infineon sucks generally ) You can see what is your RAM rated for by dividing 1000 by the number on your chips.
E.G. 1000/3.6 = 277.78 MHz
1000/2.8 = 357.14 MHz

I think that all the 9800 are made with 2.8 Samsung but I could be wrong.
And about newegg I really don't know
Hope this helps!

Here is what I read off the chip on the card :
Infineon
ddr sgram
hyb250128323C-3.6

So I guess this is a 3.6ns Infineon right ?

if it only can get up to 310, I think i would return the card.

I'd return it rather then sell it, not like he screwed up the card or anything and damaged it. Why run the risk of taking a loss on ebay??
I see your point...but at the same time I would expect more from a 9700 (component wise), and atleast he didnt fubar it then ask for an RMA like some people try

I always heard that the 3.3ns RAM was going faster than the 2.8ns RAM. It doesn't make sence, but I can corroberate it. My 2.8ns RAM doesn't clock for crap.

My 2.8ns Samung ram goes to 345 before artefacts showup. Oni's ram must be an exception to the rule because the vast majority of people I've seen with 2.8ns overclock to 325+.

3.3ns ram is normally Infineon and as guys have already said this is the worst ram for overclocking. Expect only 300Mhz and if you are lucky 310MHz.

@KevinN
Unless the memory says Infineon somewhere on it I suspect that you have Hynix memory as you would be the first person I'd have come across with 3.6ns Infineon. If you do have Hynix memory then you should get 320+ out of it. In order to achieve this though you will probably need to flash your card to a 9700pro bios. Use Mufu's bios (PAL or NTSC depending on your card) which you'll find in the sticky on flashing 9700np etc. I suggest you use Flashrom instead of ATIFlash as the latter has screwed up a few cards, that then had to be then reflashed with the aid of PCI graphics card and Flashrom!

Yep, thats infineon. Your ram is rated for 277mhz (stock non pro mem speed is 270) so I wouldn't expect much. But then again, ns isn't everything. I've seen 3.6 hynix @ 340. The only real way to know is to try.

As I stated above, I found these infos on the memory chip:
Infineon
ddr sgram
hyb250128323C-3.6

I hope it is Hynix too

I was going to get the BIOS specified for infineon only but after reading your post i might try Mufu Bios ( NTSC, since I live in US umm ) with radEdit

btw which tool do you use to adjust the core/memory ? powerstrip or rivatuner ?

The reason I said I would return the card because it is an OEM and I suspect it is a PowerColor ( red board and memory infos)
And PowerColor is the worst card you can get !!

Ah well, congratualtions, you are the first person I've come across with Infineon 3.6ns!

I suggest you use the Omega 3.4 Catalytst drivers as these have a built in control panel and overclocker that appears as a tab in the display properties. You'd probably be better off downloading the lastest version of Radclocker as I my overclocks wouldn't stick after reboot at first.

thanks for the tip
I just ran 3Dmark2001SE and got 13474. Umm is that too low for 9700NP or what ? I havent oced anything yet.
I tried to check my core/memo speed w/ powerstrip and rivatuner but dont see it.

iam running 11.0x215@2370mhz btw

You can use Radclocker with the normal 3.4/3.4 Catalyst drivers, but your score do seem on the low side. I would expect 15K+ with you CPU and memory speed.

Check to make sure all the DirectX features are enabled in the Dxdiag display tab & make sure you haven't got any AAx and AF enabled.

My 2.8 Samsung on my 9700 pro gets up to 360 stable. At 365 it starts to artifact. So for benchies I usually put it at 355.

Core gets to 380, 385 gives artifacts however they are minimal so 380 is a good spot imo for benching.

no, your still better off with the 9700np even if the memory speed isnt the the best.
