Question monitor considered old? I also have a problem!

How many years would you consider a monitor to be old. Also after how many years does a monitor actually die? I am wondering because my monitor just *died* on me somehow. I was just chatting with my friend with a instant message program and then my screen just went blank. I thought i was a video card problem but it turned out to be my monitor. Could my monitor have actually died after around 5-6 years? It's a Viewsonic 15-GS if that helps.

yup -- 5-6 years can happen. Each monitor is different -- its like cars -- the more you spend up front the longer and more up to date you can expect it to remain. I have a MAG DX15F from 93 which I bought with a Quantex P60. talk about a blast from the past. it still runs great and does 1280x1024 at 80Hz which is pretty good for a 15" Monitor. Makes a great second or in my case third monitor.

Look at this as an oppurutnity to upgrade to a better newer BIGGER monitor.

I recommend trotting over to PCWorld and checking out their reviews -- they have a running top 10 of 17 and 19 inch monitors.

I pesonally recommend the new samsung MB's but just like all hardware everyone has a different opinion.

The most important thing is to be aware fo the different technologies -- whether you go Trinitron or Shadow mask or Aperture grill. There are pro's and cons to each -- you can find a good solid monitor in any price range these days.

Good luck.

I have an old AT&T Monitor from pre-95, and it still kicks b0t. It is a 17", runs 1600x1200@60hz or 1280x1024 at 75 on my 9700 pro. I'm looking to buy a trinitron soon though, hopefully a 19 incher.

Today you can get a reasonable 19" flat screen CRT for around $250. An average 19" will do 1600x1200 at 75Hz or more.

Viewsonic and Hitachi are both good brands.

I am running an Hitachi SuperScan 20 vintage 1992 that is finally showing its age, Will be replaced come Tuesday next week with a new 19'. It's lasted a long time, and is ready for retirement lol.
