Should I upgrade to 9700pro over ti4200

I'm currently using a Geforce 4 ti4200 AGP 8X and someone is offering me an ATI 9700 PRO for $265 USD no tax (im in canada)

I've been using the Ti4200 for about 2 months.

Should I go for this deal and upgrade to the 9700 pro for that good price? or should I wait and not worth it for now?

Will I see a "big" improvement over my current card? Any opinions?

If you are happy with your current card, I see no reason to switch now. The 9700Pro is a lot better especially with AA and Aniso, but 265$ is a lot of money.

Yeah, no reason to upgrade if the current card is doing well. Personally I would wait for the next generation of cards before buying.

You will see a huge improvement and probably play all games with max settings and aa/af.

He won't see THAT much of an improvement. Most cards are fine for gaming right now. And who really wants to bother with extremely high AA? Heck, my monitor, even though fairly new can't hit higher than 1280x1024, which any GeForce 3 would have no problems running games, never mind a GF4. It is a waste.

Hell ya you will. I had a Ti4200.. i could play UT2k3 at 1280x1024 with everything on medium and low with no aa or af. With 9700 Pro i can play at 1600x1200 Everything maxed(holy *****) with everything drivers on most quality 4x/16x at the same FPS. I would be dreaming to do 2xaa or even max settings witih no aa/af with the Ti4200.

Edit: my pc was not the same but the only difference was FSB at 192 and a7v8x.

Just becuase there is a difference, doesn't mean he HAS to change. If his current card is fine, then he should opt to stay with that card until the performance is not enough to play games, ie. the standard that will be in a year or so. There is no point for him to upgrade, as the current card is fine. My GeForce4 will las another year easy, probably a little longer too.

Also, I imagine that as shook is fairly new, he is not going to have the high overclocks that you are having, which are probably in no doubt responsible for the speeds you are getting. He has also only had the 4200 for a couple of months, so even that adds into not worth changing yet.

do not agree with you, the 9700 pro for the price in USD for him after conversion represents a really good buy. He will see a huge improvement over the 4200 by far you can not even compare.

He will recoup pretty much all of what he paid on the ti4200 or he may opt to keep it for a second system. The 9700 pro is the next generation of card a huge step up from the ti4200. It will not need to be replaced for a good 2 years with the overclocking potential there is on it. I say if he has the cash go for it. As an example I plan to sell my 9500 Pro just to grab up on a 9700 non pro which after a flash will run 9700 pro speeds and to me it is well worth it as I can still get a great buck for my 9500 pro.

The idea with todays games is to play with max settings and and high res if your monitor supports it. My LCD runs all my games at 1280x1024 with settings cranked and I love it.

All comes down to the bucks if it aint gonna hurt I say go for it

If u are looking ahead to the future. Doom3/HL2 Than ya I would go for the 9700pro. U get DX9 and a performance increase that not even an overclocked Ti4200 can compare to. The Ti4200 in my opinion is good for games of today but like all other hardware when it comes to pc it's glory days will be coming to an end alot sooner than say a card with DX9. But if aren't in a hurry to upgrade then by all means stay with the Ti4200. My .02.
