i think your confusing the geometry engines with the memory bus

the 9700 DOES have four parallel geometry engines.

it has 2 128bit memory buses (i think thats how you say it) If you compare a 9700 and a 9500pro it will be pretty obvious.
 
DDR doubles the read/write speed while not affecting the bus width. Thus, for example, both the GF2 GTS and GF2 MX have 128-bit mem, even though the GTS has DDR and the MX doesn't.
