Do I need a special program to read TIFF files?

Also, does anyone know of an online file dictionary or something, that explains all the different kinds of files and what programs the files need to be viewed?

We use TIFF files all the time at my job. I just use windows imaging to view them. They are very high quality with a decent compression ratio.

This seems like a decent site about file extensions

When you say you use Windows imaging to view them, do you mean they automatically come on screen like JPEG, so you don't need anything like you would need Acrobat Reader for PDF?

Thanks for the link.
