I am looking build a new system around the AMD Athlon XP 2600+ processor. I have looked all over the web for reviews and specifications and so far have come up with the following (which could be true or not):

#1:All 2600+ processors are Thoroughbred B's (right?)
#2: There are two versions of the 2600+: a 266 FBS @ 2.13 ghz model and a 333 FSB model @ 2.08 ghz.

However, whenever I think I have it all down in my head, I go to an online retailer to buy the 333 FBS model (because I'm told it is better). But, when I see the specifications, some retailer claim to sell a 2600+ with a FSB of 333 AND a clock speed of 2.13 ghz. Is there such a thing? Is this just a huge misprint that is being cut and pasted from retailer to retailer? Or is this a real, unpublished processor? Let me know because I'm going nuts!!! Here are a few links to such "phantom processors":

Also, if this is just a misprint, which processor should I go with: the 266 FSb @ 2.13 or the 333 FBS @ 2.08 . And, is it true that the 2600+ is always a Thoroughbred B? Thanks for the help and for getting rid of my headache!!!

Yes, that is a common misprint. You should probably call the retailer to clarify. The 2600+ 333mhz models do run at 2.08ghz at stock with a multiplier of 12.5x. The 266mhz one runs at 2.13 with a default multiplier of 16x. All processors above 2400+ are always Thoroughbred B's. Which one is right for you depends on which multipliers you want to work with. The 333mhz will give you 5-12.5x on most boards, and the 266mhz one 13x and above. Some motherboards allow access to all mutlipliers, and if yours does, either would produce identical results. Generally, however, I'd suggest the 333mhz, as it will let you get higher front side buses.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Thanks for clarifying! I was about to throw my pc out the window! You've been a great help!

Any particular reason for not going with $87 2500+ Barton?
It's cheaper, available from more reliable vendor like newegg.com, it has double the cache and is more overclockable...

They even have a retail version that comes with a heatsink for less than that old 2600+ OEM costs.

Also Retail = 3 year warranty, why pass it up for less than you're going to pay for those 2600+s.

A b-stepping 1700 Dutc will run at 12.5x166fsb at 1.65 vcore(default for 2600). I have one running in my wife's computer. It only cost $41 at newegg.com but I think they're $44 now.
