If you ever get tired of initial configuration problems, there are solutions. Many live Linux CD's have autoconfiguration scripts. Knoppix is a really good one for that, or any knoppix variant (Debian-based). Even if you want to keep your current linux install, you can boot a knoppix CD and look at how its configured. Then you can mount your hdd partition and change your configs, or just note the name of the driver/module you need.
I customized a version of knoppix that runs distributed computing/stress-testing software. Also customized the look a lot, wrote scripts to make controlling the DC apps simple, and included some advanced networking and filesystem tools.
See www.knoppix.net for documetation and boot-time cheatcodes if you have trouble booting, or just ask me.
Most variants of knoppix have a hddinstall script that makes installing debian simple and mostly painless.
