The new G5 I think is made by IBM, and they are in apple. Are they really running at a true 1000fsb, or is it something like quadpumped...

This is also a good place for questions that aren't brand specific. For example, a discussion of CISC vs RISC.

Nope, Apple dropped Motorola (or was it the other way around?), and Apple "jointly developed" the G5 CPU with IBM.

Cyrix! Cyrix is long gone.

Apple didn't completely ditch motorola, they still supply chips for the ibook and iMacs.

Also, isn't this an overclocking forum? Why would anyone be talking about motorla/ibm/apple here?

The DEC Alpha was pretty bad ass... back in the day.

According to the IBM specs for the PPC970 (what Apple calls the G5), the rated FSB speed is 450Mhz, and the effective transfer rate is 900Mhz. So that means they're double-pumping (like the EV6 used by the Alpha and the Athlon). I guess IBM must've bumped up the bus speed by 50Mhz because 1000Mhz is a more magical number than 900Mhz.

It should be noted that as far as the end user is concerned, there's no difference between a 1000Mhz bus that transfers data once per cycles and a 250Mhz bus that transfers data 4 times per cycle.

I guess this is the spot for the MAC users to chat and ask questions.

Alphas were cool, but Suns I can do without. There's a Sun Ultra 10 in my cube right now that I'm using as a foot rest... and it's not particularly good even for that.

Why not stay with AMD or Intel? They're the best.
