Hi Ive just got a 2.4 system using a p4.
Is there anyway of being able to tell how overclockable the processor is without having to take the cpu out??????

Its on a shuttle av49n board!

Anyone know how good these boards are?????

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Jon

;) :D :) :p

A simple Answer: TRY it !!! depending on the chip[ you COULD get about 3.0 with a lil luck :D

How would removing the CPU tell you how high it would O/C? You mean to see where it came from? Just start trying it out & hopefully the sun will shine on your behind. :D

You can determine its overclockablity of a chip depending on its stepping, and date of manufacturing. (At least with AMD chips)

Just because a chip has a certain chip has a certain stepping or manufacturing date DOES NOT determine it's overclockability, it only provides a reference point for what others have been able to achieve. NOTHING IS GUARANTEED IN OVERCLOCKING. Besides you can obtain the stepping of a CPU by using CPU-Z you don't need to pull it out to find that, & I believe the pack date is only listed on the P4 box, it's NOT pressed into the IHS. The only info you have to remove the CPU to attain is S-SPEC & the plant where it was made.

Just by looking at a chip you can have an opinion of whether it is good or not but like Tical said, it won't give you exact measurements of how far the chip can go.

The only real way to determine that is if you actually tried to overclock it and see where it hits a wall.
