Overclockix Final

Edit: The newest iso's now use the 4.0 folding client and will detect and run 2 instances if 2 CPU's are detected.

Edit: SMP detection didn't work out, so I wrote a new script to manually create a second folding directory called makefold2

http://overclockix.octeams.com - Main page and download

http://overclockix-forum.theaog.com - Support Forum

How about some screenshots:

KDE:

Icewm:

Fluxbox:

I'm recompressing the files now and I'll burn a CD in just a bit. A little testing, and I'll upload it this AM. It's 694mb.

I provided a whole lot more documentation than in previous versions. All of knoppix.net's most useful docs, including one about using terminal services to boot a whole network off of one Overclockix CD. (I'll probably make a pre-configured Overclockix terminal server disk sometime soon so it'll be even easier to make a yatta mosnter.)

Installed Flash 6 into the web browsers. Check.

Updated the folding clients to 4.0. Check.

Fixed wine. Check.

*********

Worked on samba. Will have to test it. I think it works though, and if it doesn't there's a short procedure that can get it working, for which I've provided documentation.
Failed on all counts. Works if you want to mount remote drives, but can't share the files from the CD or ramdisk. I GIVE UP!

You can use EM3, but you'll have to mount a windows drive and move your folding directory over there. Just do this as root:

mountwindrive 1 [hostname] [sharename] [username]
enter username's password to allow sharing of a windows FAT32 drive/folder

netdrivefolding 1
netdrivefolding 2 for a 2nd overclockix machine and so on....

And then the folding scripts should all still work. Your wu's will be safe from poweroff/reboot since they'll be on a network hdd.

*********

Added a second karamba theme so you can choose between 2 different ones now. Check.

Added aterm and xcdroast. Check.

Tweaked on the Fluxbox menu- not sure if the changes will hold though. Check.

Fixed some annoying problems caused by left over temporary files. Check, but might have missed a few...

Added a few more background screens. Check.

Removed the blank konqueror window that opened at startup. Check.

Sounds good, I have 3 motherboards & CPU's here... would be GREAT for them!

Keep up the great work and FOLD ON!

Woo Hoo!!! I'm ready to download it and start folding away. I have the older version running right now. All I have to do is run the CFGFOLD and it starts going right? Do I need to format a HD to use it for the save directory or does this have the built in programs to do it?

This is literally what cfgfold does:
stops any FAH client that may already be running (one runs at startup)
restarts with the flags -config -advmethods -forceasm (so you can redo the client.cfg)
stops the client again
restarts the client in stealth mode using the new config

A good way to fold if you have extra hardware- hdd's or pen drives:

make a pesistnet home so you can save configs and changes you make. It will also automattically fold/crunch in the hdd or pen drive.

Procedure is very simple and documented.

A better option:

To send it over to a network share on another machine- say a windows box for example:

as root:

foldoff
mountwindrive 1 [hostname_of_remote_computer] [share_name] [remote_username]
You'll be prompted to enter the password for the username on your remote machine.

foldnetdrive 1

If you had another overclockix box on the network and wanted to save its wu's to the same hdd on another machine you'd do the same thing, but replace the 1's in the script with 2's. On your windows box, you'd see fold1 and fold2 in the shared directory and could tell EM3 to monitor the progress of the clients in those fold directories.

What you're doing in either case is mounting a physical medium, be it hard drive, network hard drive, or usb pen. Then moving the fold directory to it. Then creating a shortcut where the fold directory used to be that points to the new location. That way the customs scripts should still function.

If you mounted a network drive, you'll be able to use EM3 because the folding directory for the overclockix box will be kept on a windows box. But this only works for FAT32 since Linux can't write to NTFS safely.

I ran into a few snags and will crank out the CD in a a bit, then start uploading.

Cool. So I can use my main rig running Win98 to save the folding but can it save the general setup that I have to do at the beginning? I have an old WD 1.2 gig that I can format and install in the box running overclockix right now and use that for everything including the DHCP instead of my router so I can network boot a few more boxes. I may just do that, got to go to work now though.

If I am not mistaken that bklank browser window should show index.html from the CD. You should make a little page with the certain instructions for different things at least that is what they have in Knoppix-STD

I'll have to know the symptoms. black screen?

What kind of hardware are you running it on- especially video card. there are cheatcodes you can enter at the prompt. Press F2 to see a partial list. You can also stick the CD in a windows computer and browse the files- there's a full list of cheatcodes on it. And there's www.knoppix.net/docs

Let me know what kind of machine you're running it on, and I'll try to make some suggestions.

PS- ETA less than 90 minutes.

One big thing I did forget!!!!

If you want to fold in wine, make sure you delete the linux fahcores before running the windows client. it will mess up the work the linux clietn has already done. if you switch to wine right after booting up it really doesn't matter. But if you're a good ways into a wu and deceide to use wine, make sure to:

rm /home/knoppix/fold/fahcore*

before running:

wine
(generating wine's config)
fixwine
winefold

ok this is what I got:

AMD 2200+
generic CDROM drive
MSI motherboard
PCI ethernet
Rage 128 vid card.
edit: 128 Mb DDR
when I tried knoppix language=us, I get

error: only one processor found
..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC

that's it, and it would stay there.

ifconfig -a

show me the output.

What's your connection like? Behind a router or DHCP server? Or plugged right to the DSL/cable modem? Sharing a dial-up connection?

as root: ifup eth0
shoud bring the NIC up if the module is available

I'm still not totally familaiar with debian, but I think you can do:
/etc/init.d/networking restart
/etc/init.d/ifupdown restart

Its not getting a DHCP IP? Its possible the NIC is not supported, though most are. iI it turns out the driver is not on overclockix, I can add it. Until then, you'd be stuck with having to use a PCI NIC. But let's not give up hope yet.....

when I did ifconfig -a I only get lo

so I did a "ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.111 netmask 255.255.255.0 up"

ifconfig again got me both lo and etho0, but now about the gateway... I tried "route add default 192.168.0.1 1" but apparently the newer version doesn't have route but inet_route which I can't find where it is on the CDrom. My router is a D-LINK 605 with DHCP enable, it did assign a Windows box on my network an IP already, so I know it's working.

hey, I think you might have a caught a major bug. One that I can't test for. The CD you have may still be configured for my internet- it's the /etc/resolv.conf file - still has my nameservers.

So in testing the internet works fine for me, and I didn't catch it.

You can

rm /etc/resolv.conf

Then you'll need to create a new one that defines your nameservers. I'm fixing this right now.

nameserver IP_addy
nameserver IP_addy

Really sorry that happened. It's one of the last steps in remastering. After 12 or so remasters I was bound to forget it at least once.....

I did a more on resolv.conf and all I got is this 2 lines:

#Insert nameserver here
#nameserver 127.0.0.1

edit: and no need to be sorry , you're doing a hell of a job.

I give up, couldn't get it to work, I'll just wait for your final version.

the ethernet card is a Realtek 8139 by the way to see if anybody else have the same problems.

edit: you are right, I looked again and this time it has your old IPs in there, it won't let me delete it saying it's a read only file. DOH, hmmm
