the limit is 10k for every user. i doubt it will go higher any time soon as we are fighting a bandwidth problem. the avatars are a large portion of that bandwidth problem. if we make them higher than the problem just gets worse and we go even further over our limit per month.

i've seen several animated avatars that fit under the 10k limit. try to look for members who have one and ask their advice. a few that i know of are Lord Zoltan and Gandalf. give them a try.

Back in the old forums the limit was 50k I think, If I can recall correctly, And with all the members the forum was pushing some heavy bandwidth so it was cut down to 10k so most members now only have still pictures and a few have managed to cut there old avatars to 10k.

However never disregard how some types of compression can turn hundreds of Megabytes to only 64k.

Used to be 200k.

Then bandwidth got expensive, and we got big.

Now they're 10k.

We're not gonna make the limit any larger, that's already HUGE.

Yeah, we did 200k, then 100k, then 50k, now 10k.

Actually might have skipped 100k.

There were some *long* page loads with 200k avatars. :P

Is the 10k avatar limit enforced? Or is it a "good faith" guideline? After reading this thread, I was curious went around and spot checked avatar sizes. I found some that are definitly over 10k. With bandwidth being an issue, I am curious as to how this can happen.

the people who had larger avatars before the change were able to keep theirs. its not correct, but the size is only checked when you submit a new avatar. its not retroactive.

IC. Thanks Maxvla. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to scan the avatar sizes in the DB and send out an email requesting those with >10k avatars to reduce the size for the sake of bandwidth. I am not sure how many users that would be, but if it is significant, perhaps it would be worth it.
