yes it's a good starting pump, it's what I started with, but I wouldn't include it in your long term(over 1 year)plans.
 
I ordered the Quiet One 1200. With the coupon it was about $25. I liked that one because both input and output were 1/2" and stated that could be used inline. The Via Aqua said they had to be submersed. I guess the Vias need the water to help cool them off and benefit pressure wise from a sump. If I remember correctly the Quite One pumps were designed to circulate water through the Lifeguard canister filters which means they would need to deal well with back pressure.
