From The Article "Freedom vs "Freedom" - Ed Stroligo - 8/20/03

Hmmmm, looks like I'm getting about forty instances of the SoBig virus per hour. Gee, that's just what I bought a computer for.

At the moment, the viruses seem to be beating out the spam in the Battle of the Sociopathic ********.

Unfortunately, the only losers seem to be me. And you.

It appears that last week's virus knocked out the safety monitoring system of a nuclear power plant

Yet there are those in some circles who would say that this is a good reason to shut down nuclear power plants rather than virus writers.

No, this is why you need law, and law enforcement.

Freedom is not "I can do anything I want." That's not freedom. That's anarchy. That's rule of the jungle.

Freedom is "I can do what I want consistent with the rights of others." What are those rights? That's what we have constitutions and bills of right and laws, to define those rights.

There always has to be some form of "law" in a society. Even a society of saints follow rules.

We don't live in a society of saints, so laws have to be engraved on paper rather than hearts. And then they need to be enforced against those who will not otherwise obey.

This is not to say there cannot be bad laws, but bad laws do not remove the need for law, no more so than bad people remove the possibility that good people exist.

Ed appears to predict the ending of freedom on the Internet, do you agree with him ?... is this a good thing ?.. or do you disagree with his views

There are people who see inklings of a future where the Internet is corporate controlled and are trying to prevent it.

I'd rather have a Free as in Freedom Internet, and more onus on people to patch their machines or not use Outlook. Face it -- these worms are going around because there is a mass of uneducated people blissfully going around doing their lame little things online, being an unwitting node for these worms. I'd rather boot them or compel them to patch rather than see control of the Internet fall to megacorporations and be forced by law to use Windows Longhorn or some such thing.

The dumb masses have been mollycoddled in real life too - look at the existence of stupid freedom-sapping laws which soccer moms and benign dads are perfectly happy with.
There's nothing to say that the Internet can't be controlled by a few major megapolies like the phone system is.
Then we'll have two Internets - one for the US, fast, reliable, controlled; and one for the rest of the world - fast, reliable, and uncontrolled.

I'm waiting for big brother to take all the freedoms I hold dearly away... but it takes time, and one small step at a time... ask a smoker how free they feel today about 'their freedoms'.

I know, bad example (mind you I'm a reformed non-smoker), but just goes to show that once public opinion is formed you can take and run with it.

Notice how, since 9-11, we are losing minor conveniences/freedoms in lieu of 'heightened security'? Waiting 2 hours to get into the airport? People rifling through your stuff if need be? Companies tracking your internet usage? Companies suing you for things you do on the internet? Parking meters when you live and pay taxes in the city you're parking?? Did you know that a pizza joint in Albany needs a permit to have home deliveries??? You need a permit to tie your shoes in public... alright, I made that up, but you wait!

Some of this can be seen as 'reasonable', but you really need to play it to the end -- it's final, logical conclusion.

Each time you surrender a freedom you're giving a small part of your soul away. I like feeling safe in my country/homeland, but I have boundaries on the price I'm willing to pay for that sense of security (or better -- illusion of security ;) ).

Here's another [editted] George Carline quote... mind you this was BEFORE 9-11, so don't be so friggin sensitive you can't "get the point."

I'm getting tired of security at the airport, There's too much of it. I'm tired of some fat chick with a double-digit IQ and a triple-digit income rootin' around inside my bag for no reason and never finding anything. Haven't found anything yet. Haven't found one bomb in one bag. And don't tell me, "Well, the terrorists know their bags are going to be searched, so now they're leaving their bombs at home." There are no bombs! The whole thing is friggin pointless.

And it's completely without logic. There's no logic at all. They'll take away a gun but let you keep a knife. Well, what the hell is that? In fact, there's a whole list of lethal objects they allow you to take on board. Theoretically, you could take a knife, an ice pick, a hatchet, a straight razor, a pair of scissors, a chain saw, six knitting needles and a broken whiskey bottle, and the only thing they would say to you is, "That bag has to fit all the way under the seat in front of you."

And if you didn't take a weapon on board, relax. After you've been flying for about an hour, they're gonna bring you a knife and fork! They actually give you a friggin knife. It's only a table knife, but you could kill a pilot with a table knife. It might take a couple of minutes.

Especially if he's hefty. But you could get the job done. If you really wanted to kill the jerk. Hell, there are a lot of things you could use to kill a guy. You could probably beat a guy to death with the Sunday New York Times, couldn't you? Suppose you just have really big hands. Couldn't you strangle a flight attendant? Hell, you could probably strangle two of them, one with each hand. That is, if you were lucky enough to catch 'em in that little kitchen area. Just before they break out the friggin peanuts. But you could get the job done. If you really cared enough.

So why is it they allow a man with big, powerful hands to get on board an airplane? I'll tell you why. They know he's not a security risk, because he's already answered the three big questions. Question number one:

Q: "Did you pack your bags yourself?"

A: "No, Carrot Top packed my bags. He and Martha Stewart and Florence Henderson came over to the house last night, fixed me a lovely lobster Newburg, gave me a full body massage with sacred oils from India, performed a four-way around-the-world and then packed my bags. Next question."

Q: "Have your bags been in your possession the whole time?"

A: "No. Usually the night before I travel-just as the moon is rising-I place my suitcases out on the street corner and leave them there, unattended, for several hours. Just for good luck. Next question."

Q: "Has any unknown person asked you to take anything on board?"

A: "Well, what exactly is an 'unknown person'? Surely everyone is known to someone. In fact, just this morning, Kareem and Youssef Ali ben Gabba seemed to know each other quite well. They kept joking about which one of my suitcases was the heaviest."

And that's another thing they don't like at the airport. Jokes. You can't joke about a bomb. Well, why is it just jokes? What about a riddle? How about a limerick? How about a bomb anecdote? You know, no punch line, just a really cute story. Or suppose you intended the remark not as a joke but as an ironic musing? Are they prepared to make that distinction? I think not! And besides, who's to say what's funny?

Airport security is a stupid idea. It's a waste of money and it's there for only one reason: to make white people feel safe. That's all it's for. To provide a feeling, an illusion, of safety in order to placate the middle class. The authorities know they can't make airplanes safe; too many people have access. You'll notice that drug smugglers don't seem to have a lot of trouble getting their little packages on board, do they? No. And God bless them, too.

And by the way, an airplane flight shouldn't be completely safe. You need a little danger in your life. Take a friggin chance, will ya? What are you gonna do, play with your privates for another 30 years? Are you gonna read People and eat at Wendy's till the end of time? Take a friggin chance. Besides, even if they made all of the airplanes completely safe, the terrorists would simply start bombing other places that are crowded: pawnshops, crack houses, nudey bars and gang hangouts. You know, entertainment venues. The odds of your being killed by a terrorist are practically zero. So I say, relax and enjoy the show.

You have to be realistic about terrorism. Ya gotta be a realist: Certain groups of people--Muslim fundamentalists, Christian fundamentalists, Jewish fundamentalists, and just plain guys from Montana--are going to continue to make life in this country very interesting for a long, long time. That's the reality. Angry men in combat fatigues talking to God on a two-way radio and muttering incoherent slogans about freedom are eventually going to provide us with a great deal of entertainment.

Especially after your stupid friggin economy collapses all around you, and the terrorists come out of the woodwork. And you'll have anthrax in the water supply and sarin gas in the air conditioners; there'll be chemical and biological suitcase bombs in every city, and I say, "Relax, enjoy it! Enjoy the show! Take a friggin chance. Put a little fun in your life." To me, terrorism is exciting. I think the very idea that someone might set off a bomb in Macy's and kill several hundred people is exciting and stimulating, and I see it as a form of entertainment!

But I also know most Americans are soft, frightened, unimaginative people who have no idea there's such a thing as dangerous fun. And they certainly don't recognize good entertainment when they see it. I have always been willing to put myself at great personal risk for the sake of entertainment. And I've always been willing to put you at great personal risk for the same reason.

As far as I'm concerned, all of this airport security--the cameras, the questions, the screening, the searches--is just one more way of reducing your liberty and reminding you that they can mess with you any time they want, as long as you're willing to put up with it. Which means, of course, any time they want. Because that's the way Americans are now. They're always willing to trade away a little of their freedom for the feeling, the illusion--of security.

First of all Im insulted since we are a soccer mom/benign dad family...you guys are harsh!!
I am a webmaster and IT director for my company and regardless of stringent control sobig STILL got into our system because virus writers these days know how to circumvent Nortons and such...its not my fault my boss is a cheapo and refuses to take my advice and buy a harware firewall, so I'm stuck with his stupid gateway server, wal-mart pc's and Windows 2000. As far as my home PC goes, I have never gotten a virus because Im not an idiot.
And stoopid, man, you are right on. Those who smoke in NY have been completely screwed. The Man is essentially telling me I cant go out anymore. Period. If I smoke, I cant go to my favorite bar and enjoy myself because I gotta keep getting up and going out side to have a butt...yes its a hassle and yes, I shouldnt have to put up with it. I know many people who either work in bars/restaurants who have seen their income plummet cause NO ONE GOES OUT ANYMORE...I mean it, come to Syracuse and go out, there is maybe fully one half of the crowds that used to go out not even a month and a half ago... No one asked, no public vote, no nothing. Is that fair? Because a non-smoker whines people have to lose their income? What kind of nonsense is that?
This isnt freedom guys, this is turning a nice shade of pink...
These script kiddies and virus writers are really ticking me off because they are ruining it for everyone and I swear to g*d if I ever catch one of these virus writers, cause I bet its some angry pimple faced teen in his parent's basement, I'm gonna throttle the heck outta him before the autorities haul him off to his well deserved new home in the pen. We work hard for everything we have and Im tired of the idiots who destroy what I've worked for..maybe if these morons actually worked on something good it might actually BENEFIT society and then we won't have to worry about long waits at the airports and being monitord all the time. But then again, maybe we will...there are ALWAYS going to be people that hate others, there is ALWAYS some conflict, it's human nature..that's why the first Matrix didn't work...human nature NEEDS conflit, there is no Utopia in which everyone loves each other and fuzzy bunnys hop around..when I see a fuzzy bunny, my first instinct is to wonder what a Flack Cannon would do to it...I'm a nice guy, I'm a good parent BUT man, I gotta have muy Unreal fix cause ITS IN MY NATURE, just like it's in EVERYONES nature.
The end all be all is this..we are not capable of being nice to one another cause it's not in our nature and this is why laws are made..we have to be FORCED to play nice, make no questions about it....what freedoms are you whining about? We can't be free, Eve proved that from the get-go...You can't tell a society they can do whatever they want, they'll wipe themselves out in a mater of a year...I don't like a lot of the laws out there but what else ARE you gonna do? Did anyone ask me if I wanted to ban smoking? Did anyone care that my wife lost fully 2 thirds of her income cause she works in a bar?
I don't bend over for the Man, but at the same time, I was never given the choice to begin with. And don't anyone DARE say "well dude, did you vote, did you sign a petition" I take part in the electoral process and my community, however, the saying is this - "Money talks and BS walks" and that's that, I try to make informed choices concerning political candidates but it's kinda difficult when your only choices are Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber and the only reason they are on the ballot is cause they bought their places on it..when was the last time you saw a poor person or even middle class person run and be succesful in any kind of election..I'll bet thats a big NEVER.

Well, there are several ways of looking at the internet. Two of my favorites are:

Completely free -- Almost what it is today.. there are good areas, there are bad areas, it is full of viruses, and spam. People bend and break "rules" and "laws" at will, with very little respect for other people, or even property. Everything is uncensored and unfiltered, you can find anything here.

Then, the other vision, an 'AOL' vision, if you will -- where everything is clean, and moderated. Where there are no viruses, no spam, and everyone is happy and restricted. It's filtered and censored, you only see what "they" deem is suitable.

Personally, I like the internet the way it is, being open. I don't like the idea of filtering unless I'm the one that's doing it. Although there is bad stuff here, I would rather say here than in an AOL world. That would get very boring, very quickly. Anything can happen here.

For the world, I think that people would be better off from an AOL world.. I remember the days where you could run a computer without a virus scanner, without a firewall without ad-aware, without popup stoppers, without spam filters (to a degree), etc. and not be afraid. Today, if you connect a box to the net that's unpatched, it's gonna get infected almost immediately. There are so many concerns nowadays for simple people who want to check their email once a month [finding 52,235 copies of Sobig.f, among their 3 important messages].

Su root:
Ya, free and open is best. I also like that intelligence is architected into the ends of the network. I hate it when people suggest doing otherwise just because they are inconvenienced.

I don't care about any of the worms or viruses until they start affecting me. And they don't affect me until I start to see services go down from heavy traffic.

I am a webmaster and IT director for my company and regardless of stringent control sobig STILL got into our system because virus writers these days know how to circumvent Nortons and such...its not my fault my boss is a cheapo and refuses to take my advice and buy a harware firewall

Isn't SoBig purely an email virus?

Yes it is, but when you're dealing with an email provider who apparently doesn't know how to use antivirus tools it affects you because your non-technical employees are dumb enough to open anything that comes into their inbox.
Let me clarify...the company I work for is an auto shop. Most of these guys do not even own a pc at home. Our shop has only 21 computers and a server...We dont host our own email since it "too expensive to buy Exchange and a server to go with it" and my boss refuses to use anything besides Outlook and always changes the setting to "preview pane" thus opening any email automatically even though I change it on him on a daily basis....
Let's put it this way..it took me no less than SIX months to get him to replace his old Unix server that served 21 clients on 64mb of RAM and get into the 20th century and even then, he made me buy a Gateway Server cause his son works @ Gateway Country..its a constsnt battle keeping this place online but I guess it keeps me in a job at the same time..if I had my way and wrote the checks this place would have been completely redone ages ago and there would be no need for me to put out the daily fires..
And YES I am currently in the process of switching over to a more secure and reliable email provider that guaranteed me virus free email and that took, uhh, lets see, two outbreaks of KLEZ and one of sobigf to make him change his mind to spend the money...and even then he was like "Are you sure I need to do this cause I dont want to spend if its not necessary..."

Uh yeah ... different people are good for different things. Some have business acumen and some are good with computers. Some are good with cars and some are good with money. That's why we all have jobs.

What does the new server run?

You know Outlook can read email just fine off of servers that don't use Exchange... is your mail provider running a full-blown Exchange server providing you with ALL Exchange features.. over the Internet?

It doesn't cost anything to host your own email except for the cost of a domain name and an Internet line.

AOL does not censor things, only on their little community deals.Other than that you are free to open IE and go wherever you want.Plus you can sign onto aol with winpoet now, which means no more logging onto their stupid browser/community.Its sad that people willl never break away from it by using I.E. and winpoet or the connection wizard to connect to the internet. Some people like things the AOL way and will never break free, its a shame when they could learn the advantages of not using AOLs software.

you know freedom is a double edged sword. On one side is "I can do what I want ,when I want" on the other side is "I am responsibile for my actions" When you work both sides of that sword, freedom is a mighty powerful act. The problem with todays world is the lack of enforcing both sides equally. Yes we want , need and crave our freedoms but sadly we do not take responsibilty for those freedoms. it's always the "other guys fault" All these people play the "victum" and never the "responsible guy ". Holding people accountable for ther own actions is key in maintaining a free society. When society loses focus and starts enacting laws ,regulations and penalties on a wide scale,, hoping to encompass Everyone and subject them to the same penalties wheather they broke the law ,a rule, or just bothered you.......is a sad state of affairs.

There are many examples of freedoms being taken away ,bit by bit under the guise of "oh it's better for us all this way". .........thanks for listening........................:(

Not to insult anybody, but I think this article really was a childish outbreak. If you want to truly show that you are not pleased with an opposing party, you try not to act like they do while writing.
