Question Need informed opinion, LCD vs. CRT

I recently purchased an NEC 1980VS LCD monitor, which has wonderful vibrant colors, killer options, and everything a man could want.....except some ghosting on games (the primary computer occupation). The unit has a 600:1 ratio and a 25ms resonse times. The ghosting is most noticeable in fast action sequences and like in NWN when you spin the camera, the textures leaves rings on the screen, somewhat disorienting.
My question is would you hang on to this unit knowing that 19" LCDs are on the way with 16ms response times, or RMA it and wait on the new hardware releases (the clock is ticking for the refund RMA)? If I didn't know that the new specs would soon be availiable I would definitely hang on to it.
What's your take on the matter?
PS. My CRT is a Sony E400 which is no slouch in the visual department either.

Can't beat a CRT for gaming, especially if you're trying to game with a bigger LCD. I bought a Dell 18" LCD, and after a few days of use, went back to my 19" Trinitron tube, and I didn't even game with the LCD. The CRT just looks better to me.

Even with a 16ms response time, that's WAY slower than a CRT. Some people claim they can see ghosting even with the fast response, some claim they can't, nobody I know of claims they see ghosting with a CRT.

I think the LCDs with 16ms response time are acceptable for gaming, but as lyle stated, it's not gonna be as good as a CRT.

the ghosting is from the 25ms response time. that's equals around 50FPS. if it was a CRT it would be 50Hz with vertical sync on. as was said earlier in the thread 16ms is the fastest response from an LCD so 25 ms isn't exactly bad. CRT's would be better in this situation but the problem there is they don't look quite as nice and they won't stay looking nice for as long.

I agree with everyone else. LCD's just dont have the response time yet. They are very close but for serious gamers it just isn't there yet especially on the larger lcd's. That is why i got my 22" nec FE2111sb for alot less then any descent lcd .

I tried out an LCD for gaming and it wasn't as nice as CRT. I would actually be happy with CRT monitors if they didn't have to be so gigantic. I only have a `19" now and it takes up way too much desk space =(

Seriously thinking about trying out a new, better quality LCD to see what it is like now with 16ms response or better. Only problem is that Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, and other places don't seem to carry many of the better ones so if I want to try them it costs restocking fees if they aren't up to snuff =/

I've played this one, NEC 1980VS, for about two weeks now,and have decided to keep it. The minor ghosting has not been an issue and the vibrancy of the colors more than makes up for it. sure, in six months or so, they'll be faster and soon we'll unable the tell the difference, but in the meantime I'll kep this one online. I might switch the 'ol Sony back this weekend and give it a comparison, but my mind's pretty much made up.

Don't switch the Sony back to compare because it wont. The LCD will not have the same response as a CRT, but if you have already decided to keep the LCD, let your eyes get used to it. Your eyes and brain are very adaptable, so they might gradually train themselves to not notice the ghosting as much. But if you switch back to the CRT then your brain will have something fresh in its mind to compare images too and you will notice the ghosting much more.

I have an 18" Gateway LCD that i only paid $275 for last year. From the LG specs it is only rated for 35ms but with my Geforce4ti and DVI it don't have a problem with any high speed games unless it is set to a non native resolution so i have to play all games at 1280x1024 or it looks like crap. I had a 21" Sony G500 before but the PQ and small foot print of lcd won me over and i sold the sony. Ideally it would be nice to have bost as they both have their good qualities but i like many don't have the space for a 20" deep tube.
