Trying to understand

I have a n-force 2 ultra motherboard with a xp 2400 chip and 2 sticks 512 ddr 3500 433 memory. When I overclock Do I want to lower the multiplyer on my cpu and raise the fsb? Because when I do that my memory goes up past 433mhz. What should I try to keep my memory at 333mhz or 433mhz. I have my computer now overclocked like this... fsb147 multiplyer 15x memory 346mhz. At these settings my pc is running at 2.21gigs. This is my first motherboard that can let me adjust my memory and I was wondering what I should set it to. Thanx for any help with this question.

That is EXACTLY what you want to do! Since you have DDR3500 you want to run your FSB at at least 217 (you may be able to get even higher than that) and then you will have to play around to see the highest multiplier you can get. If you are running at 2.2 ghz right now, I would think that you should be able to run at 217 x 10 at least. If that works and is stable, then try 10.5 and 11. Keep in mind that you may have to raise your vcore when going to the higher multi's.

You should be able to set your memory to "SPD" and it should run at 217 with no problems since that is what it rated to run at default voltage and timings.

Your memory is rated to run at 433 by default, it could potentially run even higher than that.

I have an ABIT NF7 Nforce Board and my PCI is locked by default, so I would assume that yours is too, but without knowing your mobo I can't be sure. Just look around in your BIOS and see if you can find anything that looks like that. Be sure you lock your AGP at 66 mhz, and if you can find a PCI speed option lock it at 33 mhz.

Let me know what your mobo is and I can try to dig up a definite answer for you.

motherboard

I have a mach viper n-force 2 motherboard The bios manual I got with it dosen't say much about the setting's. I did try to lower the cpu multiplyer to 10 and tryed to up the fsb to 200 but it wont boot into windows. Right now I have the cpu multipler set at 15(default) and fsb is around 146 with memory at 346mhz.

Okay, try this. Since we know your FSB runs at 146, then keep it at 146 and lower your multi as low as your bios will let you set it. Then try to boot into windows.

If that works, keep rebooting into bios, raising your FSB 5 mhz at a time until you find out what is too high for you to get into windows at.

Once you find out how high you can get your FSB, then go back and start raising your multiplier until you find a happy medium of the two.

You will get the best results from sacrificing a high multiplier for higher FSB speed.

What do you have the voltage on your memory set to? 2.6, 2.7? Keep in mind with higher FSB you at least need to set it to 2.7 if not 2.8. Let me know how it turns out!
