SoundMax AD1985. 24bit or not?

Just curious if anyone can confirm if the SoundMax AD1985 codec supports 24bit audio file playback. I currently have the MAD plugin for WinAmp set to 24bit output, and the Directsound output plug-in says its playing a 24bit audio stream, but I just want to be sure there isn't any downsampling going on behind the scenes that allows 24bit audio to playback @ 16bits.

The sound file has to be encoded in 24bit to be effective.

Will you be able to hear the difference with your speaker setup?

It's probably dithering to 16bit on output even so, unless you're using optical/coaxial out, as most cards do.

Well the output of the file is in 24bits. I know with my the SB Live! which was only 16bit if I outputted 24bits it wouldn't playback the file. However, this is a new chip to me and I dont know anything about it. I can hear though, that the output does sound alot more cleaner then the Live! did.

I couldn't pull up any information on it. It is still based on AC97 so I wouldn't put too much hope into it. Without the card on hand I have no way of knowing for sure.

Most sound-cards output 16bit 99.9% of the time anyways. The fact it sounds better than the Live! is probably due to a cleaner signal.
