The Mission Not So Impossible….

I was wanting to know if any one could help me with my not so small problem. I would love to make my old T-Bird move over the 1.5 GHZ (it’s a 1.3) mark however there is a few points in my way. I have a crap Jet way board that will not let me set the Vcore settings for my CPU (the other jet way ones do however mines is just well crap.) then again I consider it more of a changeling therefore more worth while!

I have a dual 300 W power supply one for the board and one for every thing else with 1 Gig of rather poor SD ram. (The RAM has a TK cooling kit on top of it.) At this point in time the Ram sits at 145 FSB and the CPU on x10 being completely stable so its not all bad.

Just one thing that isn’t much of an Over Clock. If I set the Multiplier Higher then the board become unstable I think its due to the fact that I can’t change the Vcore at the moment it sitting on v1.8. I would love to make the thing go faster however I have got all the cooling it needs (A TK Volcano 7+ it ticks over at 37 C) plus the juice to do it, also the board can take up to a XP 2000 so why can’t I make it go faster?

Any help you give me would be more than wonderful.

Also here is a full listing of my system specs I am running a
1.3 T-Bird with a Jetway v266b board 1 GB SD PC133 Ram,
ATI Radeon 8500 (128mb), Sound Blaster Audigy.
IMB 89 Gig HDD
54x LG CD-ROM
Rounded IDE Cables
With a custom heat skin on the north bridge and a crystal orb fan cooling it.
One Crystal orb on the Radeon
A Thermal Take Active Ram Cooling Kit.
A Thermal Take Volcano 7 on the CPU.
In my Custom made case. (4 system fans & 2 windows.)

sounds like a well rounded system minus the motherboard and memory.

i'd start there. if you get an Abit NF7-S you will be able to overclock that CPU to it's limit. plus you'll be able to use DDR instead of the SD. just that mod alone would do wonders for your system. considering your graphics card i don't think it would be advantageous for you to upgrade the CPU just yet. that 8500 is well matched to that CPU. getting a new one wouldn't net you a tremendous gain in my opinion. if you do want to go ahead with it you can get 1700's for $50 and a 1700 (DLT3C) that will take you to 2.4 ish for $60-70.

what kind of cooling do you have on the CPU? if you want to push voltage through it you'll be making a considerable amount of heat. it would be in your best interest to get maybe an slk7 for $20.

Thanks for the info emericanchaos

Like I said I am using a Thermal Take Volcano 7 however the whole point of this exercise is that I want to overclock the CPU higher since im getting a new one when I go to UNI. Also we work in pounds (Ł) in the UK. Is there no way that I can push the T-Bird past the 1.4 mark?

yeah with the stuff i mentioned you should be able to.

i'm sure you can get the slk7 from a UK retailer. they're not exactly exotic. if you can't find one for anything reasonable i'll ship you one for cost from an american retailer if it'd be cheaper for you. the abit board might be a little harder to find. if you can't get that particular board the Epox 8RDA works well also. the newest version of the asus A7N8X is probably the third choice. what's good about AMD's is you can upgrade your motherboard without having to buy a new CPU. so if you want to upgrade later you could put up to a xp3200 in one of the Nforce2 boards.

i haven't heard of many people trying to push the thunderbirds far on modern equipment. with the stuff that's out now i don't see why you shouldn't be able to get a 70Mhz OC. i would imagine heat would be your biggest issue.

You only need what? 50 mhz? maybe you can get that 150 fsb? My PC133 did 150 no probs...

Well the memory becomes unstable after 145 FSB so that I what it is sitting at. However if I was to use a mult of even 10.5 then it would go past the 1.5 mark however when I do set the mult I get into windows then a forced restart.

The rig just doesn’t want to move to 1.5 however I got what I need to give it a volt mod and see if it works then. If not then I can get the xp 1600 that my brother has in his machine because his rig isn’t used much any more.

Hmm.. I would upgrade to some DDR personally... 1500mhz is almost useless w/out it... get some 3200 and youll be set for 400mhz fsb
