The AMD64 is a X86 processor with an extended instruction set designed to enable 64-bit computing while remaining compatible with the vast x86 infrastructure and industry experience.
The reason for this is that it allows a better upgrade path to 64 bit computing as the idea is to allow the user to still run 32 bit applications and operating systems with reasonable performance, while establishing an installed base of systems that are 64-bit capable. This allows the industry to advance software development on all fronts, with x86 compatibility, while providing the benefits of 64-bit technology, it also reducing the upgrade leap required for users

Basically its a x86 with extensions and considering the x86 architecture was not designed as a 64 bit many people are suggesting the same of the AMD64.. me I couldn't care less :D

No they say it because, it was designed on a the x86 architecture which was not designed as a 64 bit.

The comments have nothing to do with the processors performance, it has to do with the foundations of the processor.

Its true 64-bit in the 64-bit mode. The 32-bit mode is actually called the legacy mode, but it still runs that natively. The "32-bit" mode can support 64GB of RAM with Windows XP. The 64-bit mode can support more.
